Job Details

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching. Building on its more than 500-year-long tradition, it offers a broad spectrum that covers all areas of knowledge within its 18 Faculties, ranging from the humanities, law, economics and social sciences, to medicine and the natural sciences.

The Faculty of Geosciences invites applications for a

Professorship (W2) (6 years/tenure track)
of Sedimentology

commencing on April 1, 2022.

The professorship of Sedimentology is intended to strengthen research and teaching in the field of earth and environmental sciences at the Faculty of Geosciences. Applicants are expected to provide innovative and internationally visible research activities on sedimentary systems and processes at the interface with the environmental sciences. Focal points can be, for example, deciphering the physical and chemical properties of sediments and sedimentary rocks as well as their contained fossils, in order to gain fundamental knowledge about processes of deposition or lithification. Research activities may also include process-oriented and/or computational research on large-scale sedimentary systems, such as the Alps and the Alpine foreland, or focus on modelling predictive processes relevant for climate research or sustainable economic use of geo-resources. Strong links to the Faculty’s working groups, in particular Geobiology and Paleontology, Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Physical Geography, the Munich GeoCenter and LMU’s GeoBio-Center, are desired. The establishment of internationally competitive third-party funded research projects is expected.

In teaching, the subject of Sedimentology is to be represented in full breadth in the Bachelor's degree program "Geosciences" (teaching language German) and in the international Master's degree programs "Geobiology & Paleobiology", "Geomaterials and Geochemistry", "Geophysics", as well as other degree programs based at the Munich GeoCenter, and to complement the courses offered by other professors in terms of content and methodology. Some of these courses are offered jointly by TUM and LMU.

The Faculty of Geosciences is located in the center of Munich, with access to excellent networking opportunities. The Faculty of Geosciences, the Munich GeoCenter and the GeoBio-Center provide modern analytical laboratories; large equipment and computer networks are available.

LMU Munich seeks to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourages early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.

The initial appointment will be for six years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.

Under the terms of the “LMU Academic Career Program”, in exceptional cases and subject to outstanding performance in research and teaching, the position may be converted from a W2 into a W3 Full Professorship at a later date.

LMU Munich makes a point of providing newly appointed professors with various types of support, such as welcoming services and assistance for dual career couples.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. The University continues to be very successful in increasing the number of female faculty members and strongly encourages applications from female candidates. LMU Munich intends to enhance the diversity of its faculty members. Furthermore, disabled candidates with essentially equal qualifications will be given preference.

Please submit your application comprising a curriculum vitae, documentation of academic degrees and certificates, list of publications as well as a statement on your research and teaching interests to the Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Luisenstraße 37, 80333 Munich, Germany, no later than 30.09.2021. Please submit your application online via https://dekanat.geographie-muenchen.de/en/.
