Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Physical Geography and/or Geography of Public Health in the Department of Geography (Ref.: 507807), to commence on January 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

The Department of Geography, established in 1931, is the first university-level geography department in Hong Kong.  The 2021 QS World University Ranking rated the Department the 11th among the world’s top 200 universities in the subject of geography and area studies.  The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate, taught postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in human and physical geography with an interdisciplinary orientation.  Its team of 17 full-time professoriate staff, more than 30 research postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows, is actively engaged in cutting-edge research.  The Department’s scholarly activities are well supported by a map library and four modern specialized laboratories.  Information about the Department can be obtained at https://geog.hku.hk.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Geography or cognate disciplines with expertise in physical geography and/or geography of public health.  We are interested in candidates who have had research specialization within physical geography particularly biogeography, geomorphology, hydrology and/or geography of public health (with focus on spatial epidemiology and ecological studies).  They should also be able to demonstrate a strong track record of successful university teaching experiences, research publications, and external competitive grants.  The appointee is expected to teach at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise research postgraduate students, conduct and publish high quality research work, and assist in administration.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At the current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of the basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
