The School of Criminology and Criminal Justice is the largest criminology department in the UK with an established presence in undergraduate,  postgraduate and doctoral education, complemented by a successful applied criminology research profile. Within the subject area, the Institute is ranked 5th place nationally in the Guardian Course Guide and the University has been awarded Gold within the Teaching Excellence Framework.

As part of a national consortium of Higher Education providers, we have secured the tender to provide a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship, and a Degree Holder Entrant Programme, for newly recruited Police Constables in Surrey and Sussex Police and Hampshire Constabulary. These innovative courses run via e-learning with associated face-to-face masterclasses.

This contract success has led to the need for additional academic staff capacity to work with us and support the delivery of these important programmes, as such, we are looking to recruit two Workplace Tutors.

Both posts will be based at the University of Portsmouth. Travel to off-campus teaching locations will be required in all cases. However, given the current Covid-19 situation formal working from home arrangements are temporarily in place. Any successful candidate would need to confirm that they could work from home and have a secure internet connection.

A specific knowledge of one or more of the following subject areas is essential: Initial police education; the Police Education Qualifications Framework; police policy, practice and procedures; research methods and dissertation/project support.

Both the Workplace Tutor positions are offered as fixed-term contracts; one for 35 months, from September 2021, and one for 24 months, from November 2021. Please indicate in your supporting statement if you would preferred to be considered for one or the other.

As an equal opportunity employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons, and all appointments will be made on merit. We are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, and would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented in Higher Education.

This role requires access to police premises and engagement with police officers and staff. As such we will require the successful candidate to undertake the Non-Police Personnel Vetting (NPPV) process.

The University of Portsmouth believes this role may be eligible for sponsorship with UKVI under the Skilled Worker Route visa. Please familiarise yourself with the requirements set out before applying for this role. If you are unable to meet the requirements for sponsorship you will need to confirm details of an alternative visa to work in the UK when applying for this role.
