We have an exciting research assistant position available for an immediate start working in the Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Sciences in the School of Academic Psychiatry.  The purpose of the role is to provide comprehensive research support to the LonDowns and related LuMind MRC research programmes

The postholder will be responsible for recruitment of participants, ongoing data and sample collections including cognitive and behavioural testing of participants enrolled in this longitudinal study as well as obtaining information from their carers.  They will also be involved in acquiring neuroimaging data from MRI and PET scans and assisting with obtaining blood and other fluid samples.  All this will involve working flexibly to provide leave cover across other studies if required including clinical trials in neurodevelopmental conditions.  The main appointment site will be the Denmark Hill Campus.

This post will be offered on an  a fixed-term contract for two years or until 30 April 2023

This is a full-time  post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • In-depth involvement in participant recruitment and conducting neurobehavioural and cognitive testing of enrolled participants both in clinic rooms in IoPPN, Maudsley hospital and in participant homes while maintaining good relations with participants and their carers.
  • Supporting the acquisition of neuroimaging data primarily MRI, but also PET along with supporting biomarker sample collection, including blood and other samples.
  • Contribute to collaborative decision making with colleagues in area of research and demonstrate initiative and be proactive with their domain of responsibility.  Maintain collaborations while participating in internal and external networks for the exchange of information.
  • Conduct accurate data entry, data quality checks and analysis where appropriate and contributing to the provision, organisation and/or analysis of research data for reporting.
  • Good team work to effectively work with colleagues on joint projects and collaboration with academic colleagues by attending and contributing to relevant meetings.
  • The post holder will be expected to work independently and flexibly in planning day to day activities in accordance with the project deadlines.
  • To undertake any other duties, which may be required from time to time, as are consistent with the needs of the study, such as minute taking and sending out information sheets.
  • Training will be provided to familiarize the successful candidate with their duties.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1.       Relevant undergraduate degree (for example, BPS accredited Psychology Degree; Neuroscience; Child development etc.) 

2.       Knowledge and use of neurobehavioural and cognitive batteries 

3.       Administering neuropsychological and/or behavioural tests 

4.       Awareness of neurodevelopment Alzheimer’s disease and Down Sydrome

5.       Experience of working on research studies

6.       Experience of collecting and managing biological samples

7.       Experience of data entry 

8.       Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team

9.       Experience of database management and statistical software

10.   Good time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritise own workload to meet deadlines and targets

11.   Ability to explain complex ideas with clarity, and have excellent written and oral communication skills 

12.   Excellent organisational skills  

13.   Accuracy and attention to detail 

14.   Ability to travel and undertake assessments in participant’s homes 

Desirable criteria

1.       Master’s degree in Research methods/Experimental Psychology/ Neurodevelopmental Science or equivalent 

2.       Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and neurodevelopment
