Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Cancer Sciences Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton.

The Cancer Sciences Unit within the Faculty of Medicine would like to invite applications for a position as Senior Clinical Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery.

The Cancer Sciences Unit consists of over 150 scientists, clinicians and associated staff with a research budget in excess of £7m/annum, under the present leadership of Professor Tim Underwood.  Southampton was designated a Cancer Research UK Centre in 2008, with core funding renewed in 2017.  Major infrastructure support also comes from the Department of Health via the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. The Somers Cancer Research Building was constructed in 2001 and houses laboratory research in cell and molecular biology. The Southampton Centre for Cancer Immunology was constructed in 2017 and houses research in immunology as well as the Clinical Trials Unit.  The mission has always focused on bringing together excellent clinical and basic research and delivering high quality translational research for improving cancer treatment.  Our current identified research strengths focus on cancer immunology and immunotherapy, and the molecular mechanisms of malignancy, closely allied to the clinical practice in cancer treatment within the Southampton Cancer Centre.  All the groups within the Unit, while based at the General Hospital Campus, have strong collaborative links with the basic medical science groups and others on the main University Campus.  Within the clinical service there are large, well-organised multidisciplinary practices in the common malignancies and also in areas of particular expertise in non-surgical oncology (haematological malignancy, urological cancer, paediatric malignancy). The strategy is to concentrate on the areas of greatest potential overlap.

This appointment will further strengthen strategic focus on research in the field of Prehabilitation in surgery and cancer surgery, and perioperative medicine, while developing the clinical field of complex pelvic surgical oncology. 

The successful candidate will demonstrate research excellence within or complementary to these areas with clear potential to enhance the scope and potential of research in the field of Prehabilitation in surgery and cancer surgery, and perioperative medicine.  

The successful candidate will form an academic and clinical team within the Cancer Sciences Unit and with Professor Mirnezami and contribute between them 1 WTE equivalent to the clinical service, including to the 1 in 8 Colorectal on call service and the Southampton Complex Cancer and Exenterative Team. 

The candidate will make a valued contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education within the Faculty.

The individual will be strongly supported in developing an independent research group that benefits from collegiate interaction for national and international funding opportunities.
