The Indigenous Research Advisor will sit within the University’s Research Education & Development (RED) team with a matrix reporting line to the Senior Manager Indigenous Strategy, Education and Community Liaison. They will play a critical role in improving the experience of Indigenous graduate researchers at La Trobe and in providing support for and advice to any non-Indigenous and Indigenous researchers seeking to work with Indigenous communities and individuals.

About the position

In this position, the successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing a network of Indigenous graduate research students for mutual support and connection
  • Contributing to the design, development and implementation of a graduate research pathway program for Indigenous undergraduate students
  • Developing and implementing a network of Indigenous academics and connections with Indigenous community partnerships
  • Providing expert advice, guidance and support for non-Indigenous and Indigenous graduate research students and researchers seeking to work with Indigenous communities and individuals, including ethics committee and community protocol advice to any researchers engaged in research involving Indigenous peoples.

Skills & Experience

  • A degree with substantial extension of the theories and principles, learned through experience; or a range of management experience; or postgraduate qualifications, or progress towards postgraduate qualifications with extensive relevant experience; or an equivalent alternate combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and/or Indigenous staff and students in a higher education context.
  • Expert knowledge of the research and graduate research degree lifecycles, particularly as relevant to Indigenous researchers and research with Indigenous communities.
  • Ability to be responsible for program development and implementation.
