The Department is responsible for high-end research into mathematics and statistics on an international level, and academic education in mathematics based on that research. The focus areas of the research are mathematical physics, analysis, logic, mathematical biology, inverse problems, and biostatistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS IN MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS

The employment can commence, upon mutual agreement, flexibly between September 2021 and January 2022. The positions are fixed-term with appointments up to max. 3 years.

Position description and requirements

The work will be conducted in the Mathematical physics research group (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/mathematical-physics) together either with professor Antti Kupiainen (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/antti-kupiainen) professor Jani Lukkarinen (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/jani-lukkarinen). The Mathematical Physics Research Group comprises of five faculty members and fifteen post-doctoral researchers and PhD students.

We are looking for researchers with background in at least one of the following mathematical fields related to the projects involved in this call

  • Stochastic PDEs, Rigorous statistical mechanics and quantum field theory (Kupiainen)
  • Analysis of evolution equations involving nonlinearities, perturbation theory or related graph methods, mathematical kinetic theory, Bose–Einstein or other condensates (Lukkarinen)

The work includes participation in one of the following five research projects:

  1. Liouville Conformal Field Theory and related topics (Kupiainen)
  2. Renormalization Group in Stochastic PDEs and Quantum Field Theory
  3. (Kupiainen)
  4. Coagulation–fragmentation phenomena (Lukkarinen)
  5. Kinetic theory of nonlinear wave or Schrödinger evolution (Lukkarinen)
  6. Non-equilibrium systems with condensates (Lukkarinen)

The postdoctoral researchers´ work encompasses conducting research in collaboration with members of the research group and a small amount of teaching (approximately 28 hours of lecturing a year).

Salary

The salary of successful candidate will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system for Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3400 – 3800 €/month.
