The Centre for Crop and Disease Management (CCDM) at Curtin University launched in April 2014 as a co-investment between the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Curtin University. The CCDM is a major investment in research training, crop disease-focussed research activity and infrastructure. The Centre includes a new high quality research facility at Curtin, used for research and development to sustainably reduce the impact of important grain pathogens and ultimately, to provide solutions to reduce the impact of diseases on farm business resilience. The Centre’s activities integrate molecular sciences with field- based agronomy to generate new avenues to breed disease resistant germplasm and to assist farmers to sustainably utilise a full range of disease control options. The CCDM has three themes of activity with several projects in each theme. There is strong interdisciplinary collaboration within the Centre and active collaboration with leading national and international scientists.

About the role

Fungicides are widely used to protect crops from pathogens, but their longevity, biotransformation and behaviour in different species is understudied and fungicides are often used prophylactically without knowing if they provided the assumed protection. You will use and maintain WA’s first OrbiTrap Exploris 120 to examine the in planta longevity, biotransformation, movement, and distribution of agrochemicals. You will also support and collaborate in other projects able to employ the capabilities of the mass spectrometer; it is highly sensitive and ideally suited to small molecules and peptides up to 10 amino acids with samples that are not limited.

In this role you will

  • Assist a dynamic team of researchers to quantify fungicides within plant extracts
  • Find biotransformed agrochemical derivatives and participate in characterising these by MS/MS
  • Be the gatekeeper and trainer for local users of the OrbiTrap Exploris 120
  • Communicate with a broad scientific team including proteins biochemists, organic synthetic chemists, plant pathologists, geneticists and bioinformaticians
  • Support staff and students in aspects mass spectrometry

We are looking for someone with

  • A MSc or Honours degree in a relevant discipline (biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology
  • A background in mass spectrometry and familiarity with mass spectrometers.
  • Experience in quantitative mass spectrometry.
  • Experience in chemical characterisation by mass spectrometry.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication.
  • Advanced MS/MS instrument experience (e.g. QC or ability to perform routine maintenance) – desired.
