To achieve its educational aims, Leuphana University has developed a unique program aligned with the ideas of liberal education and humanism  and has founded the first public college in Germany. Based on disciplinary depth, Leuphana is rising to the challenge to increase scientific impact by means of methodological diversity and interdisciplinary cooperation.

The Faculty of Business and Economics at Leuphana University of Lüneburg invites applications for the following junior professorship:

The professorship is technically assigned to the Institute for Product and Process Innovation (PPI). The professorship is primarily focused on product design (CAD / CAM) and manufacturing-oriented process development. Additionally, additive manufacturing shall be covered.

In particular, the topics of data acquisition, digitization and process control, which are important in production technology, will be addressed and thus the core functions of the product manufacturing process will be considered as a whole.

With a focus on construction and product design in the engineering sciences, an integrative connection of the research fields of production technology and production systems is envisaged, as it will be increasingly characteristic of highly integrated and compact technology in the future. An essential field of research and application of the assistant professorship is the development process, therefore, possible candidates should have proven experience in at least one of the following topics

  • Product design / production-oriented design;
  • CAD and digital development process (digital twin);
  • Effects on the product development process.

Considering increasing product diversity and shorter product life cycles in conjunction with the conservation of raw material and energy resources, the digital modelling of technological materials in production processes is of decisive importance for Germany as a technology location and is an important field in the engineering sciences. The aim here is to develop customised materials, to optimise the properties of components, to predict and increase the reliability of products, not least to be able to significantly reduce development costs.

The subject area is structured and designed in a rather methodical and software-focused manner. The focus is on product design with the construction methods to be developed, but with strong application to technological production processes and linkage with the experimental possibilities at Leuphana as well as in cooperation with business informatics (Data Science).

For this position, we are seeking a committed early stage researcher who shows promise of excellence in teaching and research as well as unique ideas to impact their field and society. It is expected that your research is to a high degree both basic and application-oriented and in this respect it is oriented towards current technical developments. It is expected that you have first experiences with the acquisition of research funding and with project research with industry. Qualified women are especially invited to apply.

Furthermore we expect interest in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration within the institute, Leuphana and research institutions in the national and international environment, in accordance with the mission of the faculty. In particular, research cooperation in the field of sustainability is considered to be successful for the future. The PPI is an institute at the Faculty of Business and Economics that has been very successful in basic and applied research, transfer and teaching for many years. The activities include funded research projects (DFG, BMBF, EU, AIF-ZIM etc.) as well as contract research and transfer projects with numerous renowned companies in the national and international field. For years, there has been close cooperation with the Helmholtz Center Hereon.

Formal requirements (according to § 30 (2) NHG) are a university degree in a discipline relevant to the open position; your aptitude for teaching; and your ability to engage in independent academic research as demonstrated by the outstanding quality of your dissertation.

At Leuphana you will find an academic community that is open to changes in perspective and cultivates the dialogue among the different disciplines as well as between research and practice. With spirit and initiative, we address the challenges of civil society in the 21st century. Pursuing our idea of liberal education, our students are enabled to think, question and act upon it. Our professors foster the awareness of gender and diversity aspects in teaching as well as research.
