DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology requires the services of a dynamic person of proven academic stature and relevant management experience to lead the Department of Informatics.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
  • Promoting, planning, organizing and managing academic and research programmes and the Department’s research profile;
  • Recruiting and managing of world class personnel;
  • All financial activities including externally funded projects;
  • Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Marketing and growing the Department with the emphasis on growth on graduate level.  

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A relevant PhD;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • A proven understanding and publications in the broader information technology environment and IT-related subjects; 
  • Supervision and graduation of PhD and/or Master’s candidates; 
  • National recognition as a researcher. 

Professor:

  • A relevant PhD;
  • Academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • A proven understanding and publications in the broader information technology environment and IT-related subjects; 
  • Supervision and graduation of PhD students; 
  • National and international recognition as a researcher. 

Head:

  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Experience in managing Information     Technology and technical staff, particularly in a university environment; 
  • Teaching and research experience in the broader information technology environment and IT-related subjects; 
  • Experience in proposal writing, the marketing of projects to obtain research and development contracts, as well as external funding;
  • Experience in international collaboration;
  • Proven leadership, team building and communication skills. 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):  

  • Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;
  • Strong leadership and communications skills;
  • International recognition;
  • An exceptional research record in one of the department’s research specialisation fields. 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates may be expected to make a 10 minute presentation to the Appointments Committee on his / her vision for the Department. 

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term.
