The present limit of 1 ppm COS was arbitrarily set in the 1990s.   There is a commercial drive to revisit this limit and determine:

  • A safe, higher limit for COS
  • Understand the mechanisms involved in hydrolysis of COS and the partitioning between the organic and aqueous phases
  • Develop robust test procedures to measure COS and/or H2S in these environments

This industrial funded role (Phillips66 and Calor) required to develop surrogate liquid propane gas/water systems to probe the hydrolysis of COS to H2S. You will be involved in designing surrogate systems to probe the partitioning between the different phases to establish the mechanism for hydrolysis of carbonyl sulphide to hydrogen sulphide in a hydrostatically sealed propane cavern. In addition to these low level detection, quantification and calibration requires exploration.

To be successful you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification and experience in physical and/or analytical Chemistry along with extensive experience and high level knowledge in the following areas; phase separation; extraction; modelling.  The ability to model these systems would be advantageous.

You will be based predominantly in Southampton but there will be a requirement to spend time at Phillips 66 in Hull.

This position is full time, fixed term for 1 year.

Further information about the project is available from Professor John Langley via e-mail (gjl@soton.ac.uk) or by telephone 02380 592182.
