About the project

This position is to join a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) funded project that is using whole-of-population individual level data from the WA Department of Health and Medicare Australia to evaluate changes in the use of CT scanning. The study is using state-of-the-art methods from clinical epidemiology, health services research and medical physics to evaluate changes in the use, radiation burden and estimated incident cancers attributable to CT examinations undertaken in WA from 2003 – 2015.

This is an outstanding opportunity to further develop your skills in statistical analysis and to work with individual level cross-jurisdictional data.

Your new role 

  • Work with chief investigators to design and undertake statistical analysis of individual-level linked data to fulfil the objectives of the research project.
  • Contribute to the development of novel methods for analysing complex longitudinal data in health services research.
  • Prepare journal articles and conference papers suitable for publication in top-tier outlets.
  • Liaise with internal and external collaborators, and supervise postgraduate and undergraduate students as appropriate.

  • Undertake other activities which the incumbent might reasonably be expected to do, and which are consistent with the accountabilities and responsibilities as listed above.  

The successful applicant will have (selection criteria):  

  • A PhD (or soon to be awarded) that substantially incorporates quantitative analysis of data relating to human health or the health system.
  • An undergraduate degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, health services research, public health or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis including commonly used and complex statistical multivariable modelling techniques.
  • Clear evidence of hands-on experience with statistical software packages such as STATA or R.
  • Understanding of the Australian Health System and Health Policy
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research with limited supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with Research Data Governance and Human Research Ethics principles and their application to the analysis of sensitive research data.
  • Previous experience working with complex linked administrative data (desirable)  

In addition to the above for level B: 

  • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualise novel research questions in areas relevant to health services research, data science or biostatistics and develop these into research outputs.
  • Experience in supervision of research assistants and postgraduate students.
