Job description
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at Kings College London has a vacancy for the role of Faculty Health & Safety Manager. This is a key post in the Faculty’s professional services team, and the successful candidate will provide a high standard of management, support and expert advice in order for the Faculty to comply with Health & Safety (H&S) legislation and the Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) policies of the University.  
 
Reporting to the Head of Technical Services, the post holder will lead on H&S management for the Faculty, liaising with colleagues at all levels in the Professional Services teams and academic departments. They will work closely with the University’s Professional Services teams; in particular King’s Health & Safety Services and Estates & Facilities.
 
The post holder will be responsible for the timely and effective delivery of their duties. They will manage their own workload and engage with internal and external stakeholders as required. They will oversee HSW communication and engagement, working closely with colleagues to disseminate information to staff and students in the faculty.
 
The post holder will monitor H&S compliance across the Faculty, reporting breaches to the Faculty’s Health & Safety Committee, senior management and King’s Health & Safety Services as appropriate. They will maintain close links with H&S professionals within other King’s faculties and directorates, and be an active member of the King’s Health Faculties Safety Group.
 
This position is exciting opportunity to work across a range of disciplines. Across our 3 divisions with their 14 departments, we provide high-quality teaching, research and innovation across psychiatry, psychology and neuroscience. Our teaching and research activities are located in a wide range of environments, including containment level 2 laboratories, MRI scanning facilities and clinical areas in our NHS partner hospitals. The post holder will be based at our Denmark Hill campus in Camberwell but will be required travel to other King’s campuses on a regular basis.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice and oversight of Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) across the Faculty to ensure compliance with university policies and external regulations.  
  • Work independently based on an agreed work plan, setting own priorities and standards, responding to changing priorities and needs. 
  • Coordinate with colleagues on a wide range of HSW related activities including record-keeping, communications, training, events, inspections and audits. 
  • Take decisions independently or collaboratively that have an impact of over a year with potentially long-lasting implications. Take action to suspend work that poses an imminent Health & Safety risk. 
  • Forge relationships with colleagues across King’s and externally, including regulatory authorities, to gather and disseminate HSW information. Use well-developed listening and influencing skills to work effectively across teams. 
  • Communicate in a clear and effective way both orally and in writing. Write and present HSW reports at executive meetings and committees to provide information and guidance to managers. 
  • Monitor the Faculty’s key performance indicators for HSW and include clear, concise data and analysis in management reports.  
  • Support colleagues in the accident reporting/investigation process and completion of remedial actions.  
  • Contribute to the development of the strategic and operational objectives of the Faculty, including risk management, incident response and business continuity planning. 
  • Promote a positive HSW culture. Lead and encourage change and innovation in HSW and its application within the Faculty and across the University. 
  • Demonstrate leadership and innovation in the implementation of environmental sustainability. Nurture and encourage sustainable practices. 
  • Engage in Continuing Professional Development and training initiatives, delivering HSW training where required and promoting opportunities to strengthen the skills and expertise of colleagues. 
  • Facilitate an inclusive culture and ethos working with academic, research and other professional services staff and colleagues external to King’s. 
  • Deputise for the Head of Technical Services where appropriate to represent the Faculty and/or provide HSW expertise. 
  • Participate in cross- Faculty/University projects and initiatives for up to 20% FTE.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Minimum level 6 qualification in a relevant subject, such as an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and/or appropriate professional qualifications in Health & Safety management (e.g. NEBOSH). 
  • Substantial experience of Health & Safety management in a higher education or research environment with specific expertise in laboratory and/or clinical safety. 
  • Evidence of an active commitment to professional development and career progression.  
  • Full working knowledge of Health & Safety and environmental regulations and good practice applicable to the work area. 
  • A solutions-focused self-starter, with excellent planning and organisational skills.  
  • Advanced computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite, ideally including SharePoint and Teams. 
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal and influencing/behavioural skills.  
  • Experience of producing and presenting reports to management committees. 
  • Ability to engage and encourage colleagues and external contacts to build relationships, promote a positive Health & Safety culture and champion environmentally sustainable practices.  
  • A commitment to an excellent student experience, staff and student well-being, and to equality, diversity, and inclusion. 

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of delivering Health & Safety training for various levels of competency/experience.  

Further information
The post holder will act as an Authorised Witness for the Faculty’s Controlled Drugs Licences. This requires an Enhanced DBS check.
