Job description
This is an opportunity to join the Behavioral Science team in the Cancer Prevention Group at King’s College London. The post-holder will join a growing group of interdisciplinary population health researchers working on cancer prevention, screening and early diagnosis.  
 
We are looking for a research assistant to work on an exciting behavioral science project exploring the psychological impact and acceptability of a new blood test that screens for multiple types of cancer. The multi-cancer blood test is being trialed among men and women aged 50+ years in the NHS. The project will include both quantitative and qualitative studies examining psychological responses in patients receiving positive test results in the trial, as well as broader acceptability of offering this type of cancer screening in the general population.
 
The research assistant will provide support to the Principal Investigator (Dr Jo Waller) and senior research fellow (Dr Laura Marlow) in all aspects of this research. The role will involve Patient and Public Involvement, developing protocols, obtaining appropriate permissions and approvals, collecting, analysing and writing up data, and will include opportunities to publish peer-reviewed papers and engage with non-academic stakeholders.
 
The Cancer Prevention Group, which is led by Professor Peter Sasieni, currently includes some 30 grant-funded researchers (including the Cancer Prevention Trials Unit) and is divided into four research sub-teams: statistics, experimental epidemiology, observational epidemiology and behavioral sciences. Group members have substantial expertise in epidemiology, clinical studies, use of routine registries and databases, as well as related statistical methodologies. Members of the group collaborate in cancer screening research internationally.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 24 months. 
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

  • Contributing to protocol development  
  • Liaising with Patient and Public Involvement representatives 
  • Ethics applications 
  • Qualitative data collection (interviewing and running focus groups) 
  • Data management (including data entry) 
  • Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data 
  • Disseminating findings (Report writing, presentations, blogs)

Skills, knowledge, and experience 
 
Essential criteria  

  1. Undergraduate degree in Psychology or a related discipline (2:1 or 1st) 
  2. Masters degree in Health Psychology or a related discipline, or equivalent research experience
  3. Experience of designing, conducting and writing up original research (qualitative and/or quantitative)
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  5. Knowledge of the principles of cancer screening 
  6. Understanding of different research methods in behavioural science 
  7. Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards in research
  8. Ability to manage time, prioritise workload and work to deadlines
  9. Excellent attention to detail
  10. Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of quantitative data analysis (including use of SPSS/STATA or similar)
  2. Experience of qualitative data collection (e.g. conducting interviews or focus groups)  
  3. Experience of qualitative analysis (e.g. coding transcripts)
