About the opportunity 

We have a number of opportunities for outstanding early career teachers and scholars who are interested in contributing to teaching and research across many of our faculties, schools, disciplines and programs, in the role of Academic Fellow.

About you

  • completed a PhD in a relevant field (other than where a PhD is not normally required for appointment in a discipline) note for roles marked with an * a PhD is not required
  • demonstrated experience and commitment to innovative teaching, course development and assessment methods
  • demonstrated experience with e-Learning platforms
  • excellent problem-solving, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • demonstrated ability to develop and maintain excellence in an active research program
  • evidence of capacity to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment
  • the ability to assume academic roles in administration and planning in the Department and School.

Desirable characteristics include:

  • a strong record of peer-reviewed publications
  • experience of collaborative teaching and research  
  • demonstrated academic administrative skills
  • a clear understanding of the importance of student retention
  • the ability to supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. 


Academic Fellows will be appointed at a level A or B level and have a workload allocation which includes a minimum allocation of scholarship and research of 20%, maximum teaching allocation of 70% and a minimum service allocation of 10%.

Subject to the above, academic fellows can be given any workload allocation including:

  • 40 (teaching) 40 (research) 20 (governance, leadership and engagement) or
  • 70 (teaching) 20 (research) 10 (governance, leadership and engagement) or
  • Research only

To be eligible you will:

  • have Fixed Term and/or Casual employment experience totalling at least 12 months in one or more Australian universities over the preceding five years; and
  • have been awarded a PhD in a relevant field (unless otherwise specified); and
  • not held a Continuing Academic appointment in a university within the previous five years.

Applicants for the Engineering roles will also need to attach 1 page statement that addresses their experience in both teaching and research and should indicate which School in Engineering they would like to be considered for.

Academic Fellowship positions will be filled through a competitive, merit based selection process.

Term and Remuneration

Full time/Part time, continuing positions Level A and Level B, offering a remuneration package of $113K - $150K p.a., including base and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation. 

Probation period will be two years and confirmation period of three years, if successfully appointed.

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
