Job description
The post holder has a two-fold responsibility:
 
1) Responsible for the management of a clinical database for head and neck cancer patients diagnosed at Guy’s Cancer. The successful candidate will work closely with the Trust team developing a cancer research information platform as well as all other stakeholders involved (e.g. clinicians, biobank).
2) Responsible for further development of the molecular and clinical epidemiological research portfolio of the Head and Neck Cancer team, involving the use of extensive databases such as our local GSTT database and other local and national databases.
 
As a result, the post holder will spend about 50% of their time on database management and 50% on research projects.
 
This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 12 months.
This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • Enhancing through consultation, collaboration, and coordination the ability of other to conduct research and education using digital collections;
  • Being a reliable and competent partner in data archiving and preservation, while maintaining open and effective communication with the served community;
  • Providing for the integrity, reliability, and preservation of the collection by developing and implementing plans for backup, migration, maintenance, and all aspects of change control;
  • Providing mechanisms for limiting access to protect property rights, confidentiality, privacy, and to enable other restrictions as necessary or appropriate;
  • Encouraging data deposition by others by making it as easy as possible to submit data; and providing appropriate contextual information including cross-references to other data sources.
  • To work with the TOUR team in close collaboration with clinical and research scientists.
  • To disseminate the results of work through publication and presentation.
  • To develop new platforms and methods for translational research / molecular epidemiology together with the research group.
  • To supervise medical students and / or other less experienced colleagues engaged in projects.
  • Engagement in design of future studies related to clinical management of head and neck cancer

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
 
Skills, knowledge, and experience
 
Essential criteria 

  1. MSc in cancer or data-related discipline (or final year of MSc)
  2. Ability to write and communicate effectively on data analysis and interpretation
  3. Ability to work under pressure and committed to giving attention to quality and validity of the output
  4. Microsoft Office Professional, SAS, R and STATA – ability to analyse large clinical outcome data sets
  5. Experience with setting up data projects in REDCap
  6. Good statistical knowledge
  7. Highly evolved communication, interpersonal and presentation skills; including written and verbal communication, formal presentations, including to professional/external bodies.
  8. Knowledge of the Data Protection Act and other relevant security and confidentiality procedures are complied with.
  9. Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  10. Ability to interpret, apply and communicate complex information

Further information
The Translational Oncology and Urology Research (TOUR) team aims to translate science into better healthcare by translating uro-oncology research into medical practice. TOUR is led by Prof Mieke Van Hemelrijck. The translational work of the group encompasses a heterogeneous set of activities in the area of prostate, bladder, renal, and testicular cancer: epidemiology, bioinformatics, immunology, histopathology, randomized clinical trials, patient care and experience, radiotherapy, etc. However, the TOUR team is also leading Guy’s Cancer Real World Evidence Programme, which focuses on all types of cancer treated at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
 
TOUR brings together a team of researchers, clinicians, students, research nurses, trial coordinators, and database managers who are active across the field of translational research – covering both bed and bench side whilst contributing their own skills and knowledge.
 
For this specific project, we will work closely with the Head and Neck cancer MDT, which is lead by Mr Jean-Pierre Jeannon Consultant H&N Surgeon. The Head & Neck Surgery Department at GSTT is one of the largest in the UK and treats over 400 new H&N cancer patients per annum. The department offers all types of complex surgical treatments including micro-vascular free tissue transfer surgery and robotic surgery. The surgical team consists of 5 ENT Surgeons, 2 OMF surgeons and 2 Plastic Surgeons. The data manger will help develop how existing clinical electronic patient health records interact with REDcap to ensure patient recorded outcome measures (PROMS) and clinician recorded outcome measures (CROMS) are enrolled. The successful candidate will have 3 fixed clinical duties: attending the Thyroid MDT, the Head & Neck MDT & the H&N clinic. These are when new cancer patients are identified and entered into the database.
