The University of Lincoln is an ambitious and fast-growing academic community. The School of History and Heritage forms part of the College of Arts, the largest College in the University, and is located at the University’s main Brayford campus beside a natural pool in the River Witham. The School has a growing portfolio of subjects to add to its well-established History and Conservation programmes, and has launched Modern History, Philosophy and Art History and History BA courses.

The School wishes to appoint a Classicist to the position of Lecturer in Classical Studies (Roman Culture). Lincoln launched its BA (Hons) in Classical Studies in September 2018. First-year students receive a solid grounding in the art, archaeology, history, and literature of the Greek and Roman worlds, in addition to a full year’s tuition in the Latin language. Prospective applicants should specialise in Roman archaeology/material culture, with a proven ability to teach across a wide range of Classics modules, including  Roman history, Classical reception.

This post is maternity leave cover and is a teaching-focused role fixed-term for 10 months. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience of planning and delivering modules to students in both the BA (Hons) Classical Studies and BA (Hons) History degree programmes, and will be join a teaching team with expertise in ancient, late antique, and medieval history and archaeology. They will coordinate and teach first-year modules on the material culture of the Roman world, and study skills for Classicists; and second-year modules on Roman Britain and Classical reception. They may also be asked to teach in other areas of Classical Studies as required, at first-, second-, or third-year level; to supervise third-year dissertations; to take responsibility for a group of personal tutees; and will be expected to contribute to Open Days and other recruitment activities.

The successful candidate will join a thriving, friendly School with a strong collaborative culture. We take teaching and student experience very seriously, and in the latest NSS the History programme performed well.
