Professor/Associate Professor within the Area of Smart Wireless Systems

About the position

NTNU has a vacancy for permanent position at the Department of Electronic Systems (IES) at campus Gjøvik. Applicants at the Professor and Associate Professor levels are invited to apply.

He/she is expected to conduct research in cooperation with academic institutions, research centers and companies.

It is desirable that the candidate connects his / her activities to strategic research areas at NTNU and IE.

The position reports to the Head of Department

Duties of the position

  • The professor/associate professor is expected to play a leading role in research and research-based education in cooperation with existing staff at IES.
  • The successful candidate is expected to initialize and lead research within the field of Smart Wireless Systems (SWS), focusing on applied wireless system and their components.
  • From the perspective of this position, this concerns the methods, analysis and models that form the basis for the implementation of SWS.
  • The candidate is expected to take a leading role in research-based education, including supervision, teaching (both digitally and physically at campus), and course development for primarily Bachelor and Ph.D. students, and in addition to contribute establishing a future MSc program.
  • Participate in administrative activities, such as hiring committees, educational and research boards, that are conducted at IES

Required selection criteria

Professor:

The position of Professor within SWS or similar, requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-2. 

The applicant’s research must be documented and of high international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for professorial positions.

The main emphasis of the overall assessment of your application is on your submitted scientific works, including ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development in the field of SWS, and in obtaining external funding for research.

  • your academic work must be essentially within related topics in SWS or similar  

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor requires university education at doctoral level within related topics in SWS or similar and that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

  • Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within within related topics in SWS or similar    
  • The main emphasis of the overall assessment of your application is on your submitted scientific works, as well as ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development relevant to the requirements of this position.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you should document:

  • development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
  • participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Preferred selection criteria

  • Applicants with teaching experience from higher education will be preferred (ta stilling til dette – fjern dersom det ikke er aktuelt)
  • The candidate can if possible document extensive scientific and technical qualifications in one or several of the topics:
  • Telecommunications (wireless sensor networks, radio propagation, RF engineering),
  • Data acquisition and processing (computer vision, image analysis, signal processing),
  • Demonstrate professional qualifications and expertise, in both academia and industry, in essential areas of wireless sensor networks and IoT, including application experience in smart cities and environmental monitoring.
  • Capability to attract and record external research funding.
  • Extensive and solid experience in EU project development and management, as well as previous engagement in international R&I platforms or international professional communities.
  • Industrial experience and relevant collaboration with industry will be considered beneficial
  • Background in system engineering
  • Fluency in norwegian or other scandinavian language

We offer 

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1013) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 560 000 to NOK 760 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. In a position as Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 630 000 to NOK 950 000,- per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

  • Research plan proposal for the first 5 years of employment (maximum 10 pages)
  • Details of teaching qualifications based on "Documentation of applicant’s teaching qualifications in connection with appointment to an academic position at NTNU”
  • Details of the projects you have managed, with information about funding, duration and size

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.

We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years.
