The Department of Philosophy at Lingnan University is one of the best in Asia. The department is especially strong in philosophy of science, philosophical logic, metaphysics and aesthetics, and also has several members with expertise in other areas such as ethics, metaethics, epistemology, and Chinese philosophy. Faculty members publish in leading journals in the field, such as Analysis, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Ethics, Journal of Philosophical Logic, Mind, Noûs, Philosophers’ Imprint, Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and Philosophy of Science.

General Requirements

Areas of Specialization: Ethics

Candidates working on the ethics of risk, normative ethics, medical ethics (e.g., the ethics of vaccination policies and healthcare distribution), population ethics, and other issues in applied ethics related to the impact of new technologies to the future of humanity are particularly welcome.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in Philosophy by the start of the appointment. The starting date of the position is August 2021. Although exceptional cases may be considered, the PhD degree should normally have been earned no more than 3 years before the date of appointment. Applicants are required to have publications in Philosophy, preferably in leading journals or evidence of the ability to publish in such journals (e.g. in the form of unpublished writing samples).

The appointee is expected to:

  1. carry out research and submit papers to leading journals;
  2. submit grant proposals to various funding bodies;
  3. organize seminars, reading groups, workshops or other related research activities;
  4. teach courses at undergraduate and / or postgraduate levels; and
  5. perform administrative duties as assigned by the Head of the Department.

The teaching load will normally be two courses per year, distributed according to the departmental needs and upon mutual agreement. English is the main language of instruction with the possible exception for courses in Chinese philosophy.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years. Experienced appointee of Postdoctoral Fellow may carry a functional title of Research Assistant Professor.
