Reference: REQ04689
Salary: £41,527 - £49,553 per annum
Permanent, Full-time

The School of Life Sciences
There has never been a more exciting time to study the science of biology, whether your interest is in human, animal or plant life. As one of the  University’s largest departments, we are renowned for our high levels of student satisfaction on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The School of Life Sciences is looking to recruit a lecturer to join any one of their four research groups. Our philosophy is to deliver research across all levels of biological organisation, from genes and cells through to communities and ecosystems, which is undertaken within our Protein Structure and Mechanisms of Disease, Genomics and Computational Biology, Ecology and Environmental Microbiology and Plant Productivity research groups. While we welcome applications from researchers within any of these sub disciplines, and those who can work across groups, we particularly encourage applicants with a skillset and research interest in genomics approaches applied to issues of human, environmental, and plant (crop) health.

The research in the School benefits from a collegial research environment, excellent lab and computational facilities and notable year-on-year increasing success in securing research funding.

Duties of the Role
You will contribute actively to both excellence in research and education in the School of Life Sciences as a member of one of our four research groups.

Duties will include engaging effectively in substantive teaching and learning support roles in the School, and develop a broad understanding of how such activities contribute to high-quality student learning, supervising student projects, fieldwork and placements and generating external research funding.

In addition, you will engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity (resulting in internationally excellent publications) that is in keeping with REF criteria and develop a research agenda, which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives and produce research outputs for publication.

A full list of duties can be found within the jobpack attached.

Qualifications and Skills required
The successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level research degree and have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher-level if appropriate.

Experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to engage in teaching and learning support in Higher Education in imaginative, engaging and innovative ways, experience of designing and planning learning activities developing effective learning environments and approaches to student/client support and guidance and strong communication skills, both written and verbal are all essential for this post.

In addition, it is essential that you have a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.
