Research Assistant, China-Southeast Asia Relations

Job Description

We are seeking Research Assistant (RA) to provide research support for a Social Science Research Council (SSRC) funded research project titled “The Anatomy of Choice: Southeast Asia between the Superpowers”. The successful candidate will be deployed to Singapore Management University to assist Assistant Professor Charlotte Setijadi who is one of the Collaborators of the project. This is a two-year contract.

Job Responsibilities

  • Library and on-line research on (a) empirical-historical research on the relationship between ASEAN countries and China/US in the last thirty years; (b) the role of ethnic Chinese organisations, businesses, and individuals in diplomatic relations between ASEAN countries and China/US; and (c) miscellaneous topics relevant to the project
  • Writing literature reviews on topics relevant to the research
  • Organizing research materials, including assembling hard and soft copies
  • Assisting with the drafting of surveys and interview questions
  • Analysing empirical and qualitative research data, and drafting memos on the research findings
  • Working with the Post-Doctoral Fellows and other researchers from the project to organize workshops and meetings
  • Copy-editing and proof reading

Qualifications

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences. Candidates must have a strong background in political science/history (demonstrated through course work and/or independent research projects such as a senior thesis). Candidates with a Master’s degree are especially encouraged to apply
  • Self-motivation and strong analytical skills
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Good ability to read Chinese
  • This post is especially attractive for candidates interested in pursuing a Master’s/Ph.D. degree in the near future
