Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Viral Zoonoses
Guildford, Surrey
£41,526 - £54,131 p.a.

The University of Surrey is a global community of ideas and people, dedicated to life-changing research and education. Our research seeks to  answer global challenges, drive innovation and deliver real-world impact and we provide exceptional teaching and practical learning to inspire and empower our students for personal and professional success. Inventive and forward thinking, our heritage shows a recurring theme of doing things differently – and achieving notable results.  For example, we have won four Queen’s Anniversary Prizes, were awarded Gold for our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) submission and host the UKs newest accredited School of Veterinary Medicine.

Outbreaks of disease caused by viruses such as Ebola and Zika virus have illustrated the threat posed by infections that can transmit from animals to humans, and there has never been a more pressing time to invest in research and education on infectious diseases and their prevention in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences has an ambitious plan to expand the international impact of our One Health research, maximising interdisciplinary research across University Faculties and with University Partners. The first stage of this is to consolidate our existing excellence in One Health research and Zoonotic threats by recruiting two complimentary lecturer/senior lecturer positions, one focussed on emerging viruses in animals, and the other on zoonotic viruses in humans. Both posts will have a remit to cross disciplinary boundaries through their research portfolios and teaching.

We are therefore seeking new talents to complement our existing strengths and bring their own expertise and excellence to help deliver future research and teaching successes.  These new posts are designed to enable high potential early career academics to take the next step in their academic career, both supported with a start-up fund to resource a PhD three year studentship.

You will demonstrate success at Surrey through applying for and obtaining external funding, through high quality publications and impact, contributing to teaching and module or programme development, along with supervision of research students.  You will have a PhD in a relevant subject, bring a record of achievement in research and teaching and be capable of forging appropriate networks locally, nationally and internationally.

As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Viral Zoonoses you will be a member of the Section of Virology, Department of Microbial Sciences, one of four departments in the School of Biosciences and Medicine that is home to 85 academic staff.  In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), we were ranked eighth out of 94 institutions in the Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy category. The Section of Virology has an outstanding track record of grant success and high quality impactful outputs.

Informal enquires can be directed to Professor Nicolas Locker at n.locker@surrey.ac.uk

Simultaneously we are recruiting a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Emerging Viruses. Both appointments would become key members of the Faculty Infection and Immunity Research theme

In return, we offer an energetic and forward-thinking working environment with access to a variety of staff development opportunities.  You will also receive a competitive salary and a generous annual leave entitlement, USS pension scheme and discounted membership to the Surrey Sports Park.  The University is easily accessible by road and rail and is a short distance from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

We acknowledge, understand and embrace diversity and the School of Biosciences and Medicine is proud to be the recipient of the Equality Challenge Unit Athena SWAN Silver award.
