To enable world-leading research and generate knowledge that is recognised in the global academic community, we are seeking to award full PhD scholarships to outstanding candidates in a number of disciplines as outlined below to play crucial roles in the School achieving its vision of transforming business and society for the better.
As part of a world-renowned Top 100 QS ranked Russell Group University with a global reputation for academic excellence, our interdisciplinary research coalesces around multiple research centres which enables us to develop exciting, innovative and rewarding projects that address global challenges and change the world for the better. As a member of the Faculty Graduate School, the Southampton Business School’s postgraduate research students are a highly valued part of our community, and are integral to the continued success of the Business School and of the University as a whole. Our PhD programme has been awarded +3 recognition for full-time students by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and has also received research studentships from ESRC and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for its doctoral programme. We offer a stimulating, challenging and dynamic research environment for our PhD students.
We welcome applications for fully-funded PhD scholarships in the following subject areas:
- Sustainable entrepreneurship and diversity, equality and inclusion
- Entrepreneurship or SME/family business management

The Department of Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (DSIE) welcomes applications for a fully-funded PhD scholarship in sustainable entrepreneurship and diversity, equality and inclusion. As part of the University of Southampton – a top 100 university (QS & U.S. News world rankings) and a founding member of the Russell Group – DSIE enjoys a global reputation for academic excellence in research and teaching. DSIE members conduct world-class research and publish regularly in leading academic outlets, such as Academy of Management Review, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Human Relations, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management Studies, and Research Policy.
DSIE houses the Centre for Inclusive and Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CISEI), which is distinctively organized around research labs on “Entrepreneurial ecosystems”, “Philosophy and Entrepreneurship”, “Non-opportunity”, “Knowledge exchange”, “Digital business”, “Family business”, “Extra-ordinary innovation”, "Inequality and social inclusion”, and “Non-cooperative spaces”.
The successful candidate is free to study the topic of his/her interest. However, interested applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the research interests and outputs of DSIE members in the domains of sustainable entrepreneurship, diversity and equality of opportunity, as well as in the domains of entrepreneurship or small/family business management.

The scholarships consist of full tuition fees, annual stipend of £15,609 and research training support grant £750 per year for 3 years, which are open to both UK/EU and international/overseas students. Candidates will need to meet our standard admission requirements for PhD students in addition to a strong research proposal. Ideal candidates will possess bachelor’s degree with upper second or better and master’s degree with merit or equivalent in any of our broad disciplines of business and management. Candidates who are currently undertaken their master’s study can also be considered.
