The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-biological-and-environmental-sciences) is Finland’s most high-profile and extensive hub of research and teaching in the field. The professorship is based in the Molecular and Integrative Biosciences Research Programme, which is one of the three Research Programmes in the Faculty. Neurobiology, including electrophysiology and molecular and developmental biology of the brain, is an area of strength of the Programme. The other areas of strength of the Programme are cell and developmental biology, genetics, and structural biology and virology. The research and teaching activities at the Viikki Campus are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures including core facilities for e.g. DNA sequencing and genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and light- and electron microscopy (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/helsinki-institute-of-life-science/hilife-res...). Within the Research Programme, neurobiology research is supported by an in-house animal facility and abundant instrumentation for electrophysiology. There are numerous research groups in the Viikki Campus that focus on e.g. molecular and developmental neurobiology, mechanisms of cell and network level activity, as well as on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases. The Viikki Campus is one of the three centres of neuroscience research in the Helsinki area, the other two being located in the Meilahti Campus, and at the Aalto University. The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences actively develops teaching of neurobiology both at the Master’s and Doctoral levels (Master’s Programme in Neuroscience and Doctoral Programme Brain & Mind).

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR IN NEUROBIOLOGY

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate professorship (tenure track; https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/careers-at-the-university-of-helsi...) depending on the applicant’s qualifications and career stage.

We seek a neuroscientist who has a distinguished record of accomplishment in the field of neurobiology, a record of attracting external funding to support research activity, and experience in teaching and supervision. The professor is expected to build up and lead an independent research group, conduct and promote neurobiological research at a cutting-edge level, acquire external research funding, and provide research-based teaching and doctoral training. The professor is also expected to introduce novel conceptual approaches and technology to the neuroscience community within the University of Helsinki. The professor will supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and participate in the development and teaching of Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral programmes, in particular the Faculty’s Master’s Programme in Neuroscience (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/programmes/master/neuroscience) and the Doctoral Programme Brain and Mind (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/doctoral-schools-...) which is hosted by the Faculty.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations, as well as documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

An appointee to an associate professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or other means.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be given to scientific publications and their impact in the applicant’s field of research, teaching skills, experience and pedagogical training, as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and positions in international organizations.

There is no requirement to be proficient in Finnish for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in English.

The starting annual gross salary for associate professors typically amounts to 60,000 - 72,000 euros and for professors to 72,000 – 92,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s career stage and scholarly qualifications. In addition to the facilities and research infrastructure that are currently available, the Faculty will provide a significant startup package to the appointee.
