About the position

The Department of Psychology has two vacant permanent full-time positions as associate professor in social psychology and one position as associate professor in community psychology. The option to apply for promotion to a full professor post is available.

The Department of Psychology has a large and varied professional environment with broad competence within psychology. We offer a clinical program in psychology (program of professional study) and degree courses at bachelor, master and PhD level. The department is involved in extensive research collaboration, both internally and with other research environments nationally and internationally.

As an associate professor at the Department of Psychology, you will be part of an active research environment with the goal of further developing the field of study. You have good collaboration skills and aim to create a good performance environment within the field of study. You are involved in lesson planning and ensure that quality is upheld when teaching bachelor’s and master’s degree courses, and the clinical program in psychology. At the same time, you are available for the students and provide academic guidance throughout the study programs. It is expected that you participate in the administrative tasks related to program coordination, courses, examination work, meetings and committee work

You will report to the Head of department. 

Duties of the position

• Initiate and strengthen research and research dissemination within social psychology/community psychology
• Be a driving force to develop and further advance research projects and applications for research funding
• Teach the subject of social psychology/community psychology and related areas of instruction in the programs and courses the department offers
• Provide academic guidance to students taking a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD in the field of study 
• Participate in planning and execution of educational activities according to program descriptions, and evaluation and further development of educational activities and relevant study programs, including continuing and post qualifying education
• It is expected that you take on an elected or honorary appointment for a period
• Examination work
• Administrative duties

Qualification requirements

• You must be qualified for a position as associate professor within the field of social psychology/community psychology in accordance with the requirements set out in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts, and demonstrate that you are an active researcher within this discipline.
• Publication of research results in renown international journals will be emphasized. Emphasis is primarily placed on scientific work during the last five years with any statutory leave of absence deducted. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to initiate and lead research and development work.
• Very good knowledge of research methods in psychology (qualitative and/or quantitative)
• Very good oral and written presentation skills in English.

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and academic guidance at university and university college level. See the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts. If you are unable to document this, you must complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years after appointment. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) offers qualifying courses.

If you do not command a Scandinavian language, you must within three years demonstrate knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to Norwegian for Foreigners, Level 3, offered by the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Additional requirements for two of the three positions:

• For one of these three positions, good knowledge of cross-cultural psychology is a requirement
• For one of these three the positions, good knowledge of environmental psychology is a requirement

All qualified candidates will be ranked separately according to their competence in community psychology and social psychology. Further rankings will be conducted based on the additional requirements for two of the positions. The third position will not have to adhere to the additional requirements.

The final recommendations from Head of Department will depend on the overall qualifications of the qualified applicants.

Salary and conditions

In a position as associate professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 545 300 to NOK 658 300 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

This means that we pay special attention to the quality and professional breadth of these works. We also consider experience from research management and participation in research projects. We place great emphasis on your scientific work from the last five years. 

When assessing the best qualified applicant, emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, your motivation for the post, your ability to teach and pedagogical qualifications. Our assessment will be founded on documented teaching material, presentation methods in the scientific works, teaching experience, academic guidance at PhD and master’s degree level, and other teaching experience. Quality and breadth will be assessed.

Our research and teaching are based on five perspectives: biological, cognitive, social, personality and developmental psychology. We offer a clinical programme in psychology as well as study programmes in the psychology of learning and in work and organizational psychology. We have also three outpatient clinics in which we treat patients as part of the clinical programme. The Department of Psychology is one of seven departments in the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences.
