Position overview

The ANU Institute for Communication in Health Care (ICH) is an international, interdisciplinary organisation, established to promote health care communication research and the application of research findings to healthcare practice and education. The institute’s mission is to build an international, collaborative research and training hub in healthcare communication to improve patient safety and the quality of healthcare practice around the world.

ICH is currently seeking a Nursing Research Liaison to assist with the oversight, delivery and evaluation of two ongoing projects focusing on nursing communication practices in major metropolitan hospitals in NSW and Victoria. These projects are strategic, carefully calibrated and implemented interventions targeting pivotal healthcare communication interactions in hospital settings. Using translational research, they seek to reduce instances of poor communication and miscommunication between nurses, and thereby also to reduce poor outcomes for patients, as well as reducing workloads and stressors for staff and costs to the hospitals.

It will be the role of the Nursing Research Liaison to work as part of the ICH team, on-site at hospitals in NSW and Victoria, to deliver, monitor and evaluate the progress and outcomes of these interventions. More broadly, the role will involve contributing to and expanding the existing team’s expertise in healthcare communication research and education in hospitals in Australia.

Activities will include:

  • Conducting on-site evaluation of project progress across various hospital wards in multiple hospitals in NSW and Victoria
  • Helping to organise and run workshops, presentations and other training sessions on wards as necessary to assist in the implementation of new interventions
  • Liaising with the ICH team and relevant stakeholders of all levels in university and hospital settings to ensure the smooth and professional implementation and tracking of research interventions
  • Gathering and analysing data, and contributing to the writing of ICH reports and publications, for the purposes of evaluating interventions and disseminating findings among stakeholders and wider audiences

The successful applicant will need to be dynamic, flexible, resilient, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. They will need to be able to travel as needed between NSW, ACT and Victoria to perform site-based research and evaluations, and it is strongly preferable that they will be based in Sydney, NSW.
