The Senior Research Fellow will provide high quality biostatistical advice into research projects and funding applications initiated and conducted at Western Health and at Deakin University.

Reporting to the Director of the Biostatistics Unit, Deakin University, with guidance from the Research Program Director at Western Health on institutional specific priorities, this role will be based at Deakin’s Burwood campus, with periodic travel to Western Health, Sunshine required.

The successful candidate will be a statistician who can work independently with limited supervision, has expertise in designing and analysing clinical research studies and  experience teaching Statistics to non-statistical audiences.

This is a new 0.8 FTE, 2 year fixed-term position co-funded by Deakin University and Western Health with potential for extension depending on funding and performance.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Establish and maintain collaborative links with Western Health clinical researchers and with academics across the Deakin University Faculty of Health.
• Contribute to advanced Biostatistics teaching for the School of Health and Social Development,  Faculty of Health, by taking the Unit Chair role for HSH947/747 (PHDXtra unit).
• Provide research mentoring and support to higher degree by research candidates and junior colleagues.
• Undertake statistical tasks comprising data management and manipulation, data analysis and preparation of reports of statistical results.
• Participate in and/or lead applications for external competitive funding or research tenders.
• Lead or actively contribute to research output including publication in top peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

To be successful, you’ll have:

• PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics or Data Science.
• Demonstrated sound understanding of biostatistical methodology.
• Extensive experience in the design of clinical trials, cohort studies and health service research.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a biostatistician across interdisciplinary teams.
• Outstanding ability to communicate findings to non-statisticians and students.
• Experience as an applied statistician as demonstrated by publications, conference papers, reports or technical contributions in the health sciences.
• Demonstrated ability in the preparation of successful competitive research grant applications, study protocols, and statistical analysis plans.
• Strong statistical programming skills, with expertise in software packages such as SAS, R or STATA.
• Experience teaching Biostatistics to non-statistical audiences.
• Experience in the design and management of databases.
• Proactivity and willingness to learn new analytical approaches to address project demands.
• Ability to develop new statistical methodology as demonstrated by publications, conference papers and/or technical contributions *desirable.
• Experience analysing complex observational studies *desirable.
• Knowledge of guidelines for the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects *desirable.
