BRIEF DESCRIPTION    

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Khalifa University’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) provides overall administrative leadership and policy development and implementation for academic matters, assessment and evaluation of students, faculty affairs, and research administration.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION    

Operational Responsibilities

Leadership for developing and maintaining CMHS educational programs:

  • Oversee graduate and medical education programs offered through the CMHS; work with department chairs, leadership from the other colleges of the university, faculty, external stakeholders, and others to foster a climate of academic excellence, collaboration, and interdisciplinary initiatives
  • Ensure that all academic programs conform to laws, regulations, and policies of the United Arab Emirates
  • Oversee and provide support for CMHS programs accreditation
  • Manage the student promotions and advancement process

Faculty Affairs

  • Develop a supportive infrastructure to facilitate the recruitment, appointment, retention, and promotion process of faculty members across all departments, institutes, and faculty lines
  • Develop, implement, and administer Khalifa University policies regarding faculty
  • Oversee and support the faculty in the preparation and submission of tenure/promotion applications
  • Create mechanisms and programs for faculty diversity and development in partnership with the department chairs and other related committees/groups

Other Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the other Associate Deans of the CMHS to ensure compliance with relevant policies and strategic plans of Khalifa University
  • Lead all processes related to accreditation programs related to medical education at the CMHS
  • Develop CMHS committee charges with responsibility for Academic Affairs (Curriculum Committee; Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee (APT), Medical Student Evaluation and Promotion Process (MSEPC) Service Committee, etc.) in consultation with the Dean and others
  • Oversee the library requirements of the CMHS with the University’s head librarian
  • Review and approve the budget for all academic departments and programs, including faculty and staff salaries in consultation with the Dean and others
  • Participate in Advisory Boards and other special committees as appropriate or required to represent the CMHS to other external audiences such as medical associations, corporate sponsors, stakeholders, and government leaders
  • Ensure adherence to Khalifa University’s information security policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
  • Ensure coordination with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed
  • Serve on and/or represents the Dean on university and college committees as appropriate
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Dean

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentoring as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensure the achievement of established objectives and plans
  • Recommend appropriate training courses as per the pre-determined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor their results
  • Carry out performance appraisals for subordinates according to planned schedules and recommend necessary actions as per the applied practices
  • Conduct periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly
  • Follow-up on employees’ administrative affairs such as vacations, leaves, and other administrative and related affairs

JOB REQUIREMENTS    

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent)Completed at least 8 years of relevant academic experience, with at least 2 years in an academic administrative role
  • Demonstrable accomplishments in teaching, research, and service at a level commensurate of an Associate or Full Professor in a biomedical science or biomedical engineering discipline
  • Completion of a degree in management will be viewed favorably

Required Experience

  • Associate or Full Professor with a minimum of 8 years of responsible education-related experience in leading and successfully managing educational programs in a university including 5 years of teaching experience at the level of Associate or Full Professor in higher education
  • Strong record in teaching and research reflecting academic excellence
  • Proven management experience, requisite expertise in working collaboratively with faculty members and medical professionals, strong interpersonal skills, and a thorough understanding of university structure and culture are essential
  • Some experience in healthcare management will be viewed favorably
  • Demonstrable ethical behavior, professionalism, interpersonal skills, leadership, and management abilities that is sufficient to effectively direct and develop staff and students
  • Familiarity or experience with an educational institution in the Middle East will be viewed favorably
