You will have opportunity to demonstrate your expertise in undertaking research and in the delivery of our Engineering courses particularly related to undergraduate and postgraduate courses in automotive engineering.  Located in a modern £300m campus in the heart of Birmingham, at the City Centre Campus, the School of Engineering and the Built Environment is a thriving, vibrant, and inspiring learning community committed to excellence in research, high quality teaching and impactful industrial engagement with current investment in automotive engineering including a new electric vehicle test cell.

We are a practice-based school, our undergraduate programmes are delivered using the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) framework, making our teaching and research relevant to the evolving world around us. We work in a collaborative and cross disciplinary culture where interacting freely across the school and with colleagues in other schools is encouraged to gain a unique insight into impactful problem domains.

We seek individuals capable of teaching that is aligned to the activities of the Department of Engineering. Applicants will teach across a variety of different areas and will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Salary will vary depending on the level of appointment:

Lecturer - £37,505 to £40,766 per annum
Senior Lecturer - £46,376 to £50,408 per annum

The Role

  • Provide an excellent student experience through managing taught programmes and delivery, in particular in particular MEng, BEng, Msc Automotive Engineering and MEng, BEng, Msc Mechanical Engineering
  • Participate in / Contribute to research activity in the subject area
  • Undertake personal tutoring
  • Participate in and develop internal and external networks

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • A good first degree and PhD, or willing to study for a PhD in the subject field
  • Teaching qualification or preparedness to work towards.
  • Evidence of excellent teaching identified by peer review. 
  • Contributed to high quality publications or other relevant outputs in research or leading edge practice. 
  • Proven post-graduate level mathematical and analysis skills and associated computational simulation, use of Matlab, Ansys, Adams, Catia, Solidworks or similar software

Subject expertise in:

  • Mechanical / Engineering Design and Modelling 
  • Structural mechanics

Desirable

  • CDIO methodology & implementation
  • Demonstrable ability to lead research projects, win bids and generate income
  • Track record of successful networking, for example as Link-Tutor
  • Eligible for Fellow status under the Higher Education Academy’s Professional Standards Framework. (FHEA)

For roles at a more senior level preference will be given to staff who can demonstrate a research publication track record in well regarded refereed journals and/or securing research grants and contracts. Applicants who have a Masters qualification and extensive practice experience at managerial level will also be considered. Strong leadership background within academia or industry is essential for the Associate Professor role.

Selection and Interview Process
