  • Full-time, 1 year fixed-term contract based at RMIT City campus but will be required to work and/or be based at other campuses of the University
  • Appointee for this position must hold an Australian citizenship OR Australian permanent residency as this project is expected to work closely with the Defence Sciences Technology Group (DSTG)
  • Opportunity to conduct research in the external-funded NEXUS project, "Explainable and Unified Reasoning and Sensor Fusion" , a collaboration between RMIT, DSTG, and University of Melbourne.
  • Applicants with experience in one or more of techniques such as Knowledge Representation (KR), knowledge graphs and ontologies; stream processing and online algorithms; Markov logic networks (MLNs) or Markov random fields; and qualitative spatial logics, such as RCC, qualitative trajectory calculus, or with experience in one or more of the technologies such as Protégé, Apache Jena and Fuseki, and SPARQL; Apache KAFKA; QGIS and PostGIS; and Python, Java, R and LaTeX are particularly encouraged to apply.

  • Remuneration at Academic B ($98,495 - $139,129) OR Academic Level C ($120,657 - $139,129) + 17% superannuation

School of Science

The School of Science provides more than 45 bachelor and postgraduate programs to 5,000 students and undertakes world-class research across the disciplines of:

  • biosciences and food technology
  • applied chemistry and environmental science
  • physics

  • geospatial sciences

Geospatial Sciences is amongst the largest academic group of its kind in Australia. With more than 30 academic and research staff, over 300 students enrolled in undergraduate, and taught and research postgraduate programs, our Geospatial Science research and teaching covers the breadth of topics in the field, including measurement sciences, surveying, and land development, geodesy and satellite positioning, remote sensing and photogrammetry, GIS and spatial computing, and cartography and geovisualisation.

About You and the Role

  • Perform high-impact research and development activities in the area of spatial reasoning and sensor fusion using broad range of broad range of techniques and tools, languages and technologies;
  • Be actively involved in the project management of the research as well as contribute and deliver impactful research outcomes & reports that are relevant to the funding body;
  • Prepare and publish high quality articles in high impact journals in line RMITs intellectual property obligations set out in the primary contract for the projects;
  • Collaborate and engage with multidisciplinary researchers in the NEXUS project, a funded research collaboration between RMIT, University of Melbourne, and DSTG (Defence Sciences Technology Group);
  • Contribute 10% of your time to mentor & supervise undergraduate students appropriate to areas of expertise as well as administrative functions related to the research project.



PhD in Geospatial Science, Signal Processing, Artificial Intelligence or other relevant fields, either completed or in the final stages of writing thesis/ thesis submissions.

An emerging track record of high-quality research in spatial computing, spatial reasoning, geographic information science, sensor fusion, knowledge representation, artificial intelligence, positioning, signal processing or a closely related area.

Ability to work remotely on the project and conducting research as well as collaborating online with the team in the context of COVID-19 restrictions.


Australian permanent residency or citizenship.


  • Emerging research track record and recognition for high quality research outputs, as evidenced by publications aligned with one or more core areas of research focus (such as spatial computing, positioning, machine intelligence, sensor fusion);
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with one or more of the following techniques: knowledge representation (KR), knowledge graphs and ontologies; stream processing and online algorithms; Markov logic networks (MLNs) or Markov random fields; and qualitative spatial logics, such as RCC, qualitative trajectory calculus;
  • Proven or demonstratable experience with one or more of the following tools, languages, and technologies: Protégé, Apache Jena and Fuseki, and SPARQL; Apache KAFKA; QGIS and PostGIS; and Python, Java, R and LaTeX.
