Research Fellowship position at Centre for Materials in Energy and Catalysis (CMEC), to engineer energy materials driven by machine learning and AI.

Build your research career at the School of Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials in a world-class research centre led by ARC Laureate Fellow, Professor Shizhang Qiao.

Supported by DVCR office, this research fellow position aims to conduct pilot research in the area of AI-Driven Materials Discovery.

In the past, new energy material discovery is often trial-and-error based which is onerous and time-consuming. Instead, quantum chemistry based computation could provide atomic-scale insight into different reactions and direct the design of new energy materials. However, due to the complexity of the catalyst surface and reaction intermediates under reaction condition, it is normally challenging to directly link what happens during the reactions and what’s been predicted by computation. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), it would become feasible to model the reaction in Operando, since AI has the ability to learn from expensive quantum chemistry results and make reliable predictions of key characteristics. In this way, a more reliable link between experiment and theoretical computation could be realized.

The successful applicant will be working in CMEC, with extensive collaboration with Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML). CMEC is a materials-engineering research leader, developing new materials and catalysts to enable positive social, environmental and economic impact. It is the home to eight Highly Cited researchers. AIML is the largest machine learning and computer vision group in the country, boasting outstanding research expertise and state of the art facilities recognised on a global scale.

To be successful at Level A you will need:

  • A recent Ph.D. in the field of Material Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, or related discipline areas.
  • A strong track record of research, relative to the career opportunity, in the field of Computational Material Science or Machine Learning, as evidenced by a nationally recognised publication record.
  • Knowledge and experience in; theoretical modelling of materials for energy-related applications, software for computational materials; for example, VASP, Dmol3, CASTEP and programming language for machine learning; for example, Python, TensorFlow, Matlab.
  • Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

In addition to the above, to be successful at Level B you will need:

  • A strong track record of research in prestigious journals, relative to the career opportunity, in the field of Computational Material Science or Machine Learning, as evidenced by a nationally recognised publication record.
  • Experience in writing and securing external funding.
