Job Description
The Randall Centre for Cell and Molecular Biophysics/School of Basic and Medical Biosciences is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Computational Biophysics.

The post will be embedded in the highly interdisciplinary and collaborative environment of the Randall Centre, and the successful candidate will join an interactive group of investigators with expertise in X-ray crystallography, NMR and other biophysical approaches.

The appointee will develop strong, internationally recognised research programmes that combine Structural Biology and Biophysics with Computational methods, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Examples of relevant research topics include but are not limited to: i) Computational Protein Design and Protein Engineering, ii) Integrative Modelling for Molecular Biophysics iii) The use of combined high-throughput and Deep Learning approaches to interrogate molecular and cellular functions.
 
The appointee will contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching across our Biochemistry programmes.

You should hold a PhD in computational Biophysics or related subjects, an excellent publications track record, experience in attracting peer reviewed research grant funding and experience in undergraduate and/or post graduate teaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide academic leadership (according to level of experience) in Computational Methods for Proteins and Nucleic Acids Structure Design; use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in the context of Biological and Biophysical data.
  • Establish, develop and sustain a nationally/internationally competitive, externally-funded research programme consistent with, or complementary to the interests of the Department/School/Faculty research strategies.
  • Maintain a consistent, outstanding track record of publication (typically 2-4 research publications (depending on appointment level) over a rolling five year period that include world leading or internationally excellent work, as first, last and/or corresponding author).
  • Contribute to teaching of undergraduate and post graduate students and curriculum development
  • Plan, organise and deliver a range of teaching and assessment activities (e.g. lecturing, project supervision and tutorials) and, at Senior Lecturer level, leading on at least one substantive module/programme.
  • Supervise and train postgraduate and undergraduate students to ensure their effective development
  • Supervise and train research and technical staff employed on the post holder’s research projects to ensure their effective development.
  • Engage in the dissemination of research through knowledge transfer, outreach, continuing professional development, public engagement etc.
  • Contribute fully to academic life and strategic planning across the Department/School and, where required/appropriate to the wider strategic planning processes at Faculty and University level at a level appropriate to appointment.
  • Identify strategic development opportunities in teaching and research and contribute to the development of these ideas.

Skills, Knowledge, & Experience 

Essential criteria @ Grade 8, Senior Lecturer

  • PhD/DPhil Degree
  • Significant expertise in the field of Computational Biophysics and Biology
  • Experience in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applied to Biology and Biophysics
  • Significant experience of delivery of undergraduate teaching in human physiology
  • Record of attracting peer reviewed research grant funding or fellowships
  • Outstanding track record of publication
  • Ability to define and lead a research area, taking responsibility for planning and undertaking own work.
  • Ability to work well as an effective member of a wider multi-disciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice
  • Experience in supervising and developing research students and/or research staff.
  • Experience in contribution to academic administration

Desirable criteria @ Grade 8, Senior Lecturer

  • Experience of teaching programme development
  • Experience of working in collaborative projects across disciplines
  • Experience of serving on professional scientific boards and commitees
  • Ability to apply Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to diverse datasets in Structural and Cellular Biophysics.

Essential Criteria @ Grade 7, Lecturer

  • PhD/DPhil Degree
  • Expertise in the field of Computational Biophysics and Biology
  • Experience in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applied to Biology and Biophysics
  • Experience of undergraduate and/or post graduate teaching in human physiology
  • Record of publication in peer reviewed journals
  • Demonstrable contribution to developing peer reviewed funding/fellowship applications.
  • Ability to define and lead a research area, taking responsibility for planning and undertaking own work.
  • Ability to work well as an effective member of a wider multi-disciplinary team and to share and encourage good practice 

Desirable criteria @ Grade 7, Lecturer

  • Experience of teaching programme and/or curriculum development.
  • Record of attracting independent peer reviewed research grant funding
  • Experience in supervising and developing research students and/or staff
  • Ability to apply Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to diverse datasets in Structural and Cellular Biophysics.
