Monash University, a global top-100 university, and Monash Suzhou, its Chinese partnership with Southeast University, have started the global search for an inaugural director of the Advanced Computational Centre (ACC) to be based at the Monash Suzhou Research Institute (MSRI). Established in 2012, Monash Suzhou is the first Sino-Australian university venture based in China and has grown to serve over 500 students a year as well as to encompass a variety of agile interdisciplinary research endeavours that address emerging global themes.

The Opportunity

Monash Suzhou’s remit is to foster world-class research and training in China through postgraduate programs, collaborative multidisciplinary research and industry engagement. The ACC Director’s responsibilities will span all three of those areas.

The appointee will hold a permanent professorial (Level E, continuing) appointment and shape AI and Data Science research, training and engagement at Monash Suzhou and beyond. Importantly, while the appointment will officially be with MSRI, the Director will be of strategic importance to Monash Suzhou as a whole and have strong ties to Monash’s Faculty of Information Technology, including an professorial adjunct appointment there, undertaking regular visits to Melbourne.

In addition to this engagement with a global top-100 university, the ACC’s location in the Suzhou Industrial Park, a booming incubator for research translation and commercialisation, will allow access to multinationals such as Samsung, Honeywell and Panasonic among over one hundred Fortune 500 companies.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an enterprising scholar and leader able to straddle academia and industry, building a leading program in translational AI and Data Science research. The Director, who ideally will have familiarity with China and the Chinese research environment, will be an active, distinguished scientist with the vision to set the ACC’s research direction and facilitate partnerships and also further develop quality education programs. They will also have the intellectual generosity to nurture emerging faculty and more broadly to cultivate an ecosystem where innovation and discovery can thrive.
