Continuing Contract

Description

The Division of Arts and Humanities at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) invites applications for an open rank, full-time contract faculty position in the Theater Program. We seek an educator whose work is located in both practice and scholarship to develop our BA curriculum in the area of Live Arts/Arts as Social Practice. The ideal candidate would have teaching experience, a terminal degree and a demonstrable focus on Performance and Theater as a Social Practice. Such a person should bring into conversation - politics, activism, aesthetics, community and social structures. We seek a colleague who will lead our students in investigations and art making projects that intertwine art practices and scholarly disciplines. All courses will be geared to students with multiple academic and creative interests, activating not only Theater Program students, but also students enrolled in majors across the university. We are seeking a faculty member who will use this new position to open and expand our student’s engagement with theater, performance and citizenship.

The NYU Abu Dhabi Theater Program is an academic and artistic laboratory dedicated to theater research, scholarship and practice. Reflecting the cosmopolitan vision of NYUAD, a global liberal arts university with students gathered from 115 countries, we provide a rigorous approach to artist training, a solid scholarly foundation in theater history, theory and criticism, and exposure to a variety of transnational cultural practices through the study of theater and performance. For NYUAD theater majors, making and thinking – creating and articulating culture - are inseparable tasks. Our aim is to develop artist-citizens whose theatrical contributions will expand the limits of the field and make a difference in the world. We expect NYUAD Theater graduates to collaborate eagerly with other artists, scientists and scholars across disciplines and invent new and hybrid cultural practices that will come to define what theater will be in the 21st century.

NYUAD values diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity; such principles are fundamental to the university's commitment to excellence. Our faculty are the engines that sustain our inclusive environment; NYUAD students come from more than 115 countries, with no single one nationality exceeding more than 15 percent of the total student population. Our modern campus is home to over 320 faculty who represent more than 45 different nationalities, all of whom bring a global perspective to their classrooms and research projects. Research is advanced by over 400 highly qualified research staff, who are likewise drawn from all over the world.

This is an open-rank search and a renewable arts contract position, which includes: a course load of 3-4 courses per year; serving as an academic advisor; serving as a faculty advisor for student projects and interest groups; collaborations with faculty, instructors, and staff in ongoing program and curriculum development; initiating growth within the program and division and support for research endeavors.
