Job Details

  • Opportunity to join the Quantum Physics Research Group
  • Located on the Camperdown Campus at the School of Physics
  • 2 x full time/part time fixed term opportunities for 2 years offering a base salary of $108-128K p.a., plus leave loading and generous employer's contribution to superannuation

About the opportunity

Applications are invited for the appointment of a Research Fellow (Level B) in Quantum Information Theory at the Quantum Physics Research Group, School of Physics. Our theory group leads core research projects in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS), as well a number of other large international programs. The theory group is led by Professor Stephen Bartlett.

We require two postdoctoral theorists to undertake research in quantum information theory, specifically in the area of Quantum Characterization of Intermediate Scale Systems.

The Quantum Physics Research Group supports a flexible working environment; subject to visa restrictions, this opportunity is available as either a full-time or part-time position.

About you

The University values courage and creativity; openness and engagement; inclusion and diversity; and respect and integrity. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Research Fellow who has:

  • a PhD in Physics or a related discipline (or near completion)
  • a strong background in quantum information theory or related areas
  • the ability to clearly express your ideas and communicate in a team
  • the ability to work independently on problems, and motivate junior members of the team
  • the ability to see the bigger picture, and have vision for the future development of the project
  • a demonstrated capacity to conduct theoretical research in quantum information theory.

Desirable criteria include:

  • demonstrated capacity to co-supervise research students on projects in this area, with assistance and mentoring from senior academic staff
  • familiarity with the theoretical methods of quantum error correction, and the theory of fault-tolerant quantum computing
  • background in quantum information theory as applied to quantum many body systems and spin lattices

To apply for this position, please address the following questions in a cover letter and attach to your application:

What is your most significant research achievement in quantum information theory? Please outline the impact of this achievement, and your role in it. How have you demonstrated that you can collaborate on research in quantum information theory, and can work as part of a team? What are your research plans and ambitions for the next 2 years?

In support of your application, please arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to by 2 May 2021.

Other

Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
