The University of Liverpool seeks to appoint an exceptional individual as the Professor Sir Alasdair Breckenridge Chair of Pharmacology and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.  

The award-winning Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, which sits in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, is one of the oldest and largest in the UK. It has an international reputation for understanding all aspects of drug actions and remarkable research expertise in toxicology and drug safety, antimicrobial pharmacodynamics, HIV, epilepsy, drug molecular nano-formulations and personalised medicine. Research facilities are state-of-the-art and the culture is collaborative, interdisciplinary and international.

The Department was honoured in 2018 with the Queen’s Anniversary Award in Higher Education. Prior to this, it was recognised by the British Pharmacological Society as a site of special scientific interest after being judged to have made outstanding contributions to the discovery and development of medicines. The ultimate aim of the Department’s research is to translate laboratory findings into the clinic for the benefit of patients, the public and the healthcare system. 

The ideal candidate will be medically qualified, and will bring a successful track record as a leader in a research-intensive environment and will have a strong personal profile in research.  They will be ambitious for the Department and keen to build strategically on existing research while maintaining the Department’s collegiate culture.
