Professor and Head of School of Biosciences and Medicine
Professorial salary up to £110,663 plus Head of School allowance
Guildford, Surrey

The post of Head of School of Biosciences and Medicine presents an opportunity for exceptional scholars with a commitment to fostering a research and learning community that is as collegial and inclusive as it is innovative.  Your dedication to the highest standards of education and student and staff wellbeing will underpin your career to date.  In terms of the discipline, you will have a track record of high-quality research in an area of Biosciences that complements our existing specialisms along with the academic standing and strategic vision to be a credible and inspirational leader of our team.

The Headship is for five years in the first instance (subject to renewal) after which point the role holder will resume professorial duties within the School.

The University of Surrey is an ambitious, research-led organization. We are committed to research excellence and to the application of our research for the benefit of society through our enterprising and forward-thinking spirit.

Biosciences and Medicine at Surrey has a track record of innovation with our activity embracing the ‘bench-to-bedside’ concept and extending to the ‘second translation’ or bedside-to-clinical-practice domain. The School of Biosciences and Medicine has a long-standing reputation for its vibrant and supportive research-led teaching environment (we were ranked in the top 10 for biosciences by the Guardian University Guide 2020) with a current profile of 1500+ students across the foundation year, undergraduate, masters and doctoral portfolio, supported by over 175 staff. Strong connections with the Pirbright Institute, industry and NHS enrich the curriculum and make a significant contribution to the School’s applied research and the high rates of employment for Surrey’s Biosciences graduates. Amongst our extensive lab portfolio, our students benefit from our recent £10M Innovation for Health Learning Laboratory, fitted with the latest industry equipment for our students to carry out a full range of experiments, completing their first experiment within their first two weeks.

To build on our achievements to date we are looking for an individual who brings a combination of research leader and engaging Head of School, capable of driving forward our ambition and increasing our connections enabling applied/commercialisation activity inside and outside of the discipline.

Colleagues in the School are proud that their commitment to championing the benefits of equality, diversity and inclusion in their School workforce was acknowledged in September 2017 by an Athena SWAN Silver award from the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU); this Silver award was the first to be awarded to the University of Surrey.
