Edinburgh Napier University is an enhancement-led institution, committed to enabling students to thrive as learners through high quality teaching, research and professional practice. In the current academic year, we were placed 28th in the UK and number one in Edinburgh for Student Satisfaction (National Student Survey 2020), top Modern University in Scotland and one of the leading universities in Scotland for graduate employability (GUG 2021). We are a truly international University with 20,000 students from over 110 countries. The new Learning and Teaching Strategy is ambitious, both for students and staff. This strategy is introducing a Gold Standard Curriculum which will further strengthen the curriculum offer for our students and our academic reputation.

The role

The Department of Learning and Teaching Enhancement (DLTE) sits centrally in the institution and plays a key role in driving strategic change through the development of the University’s curriculum and through its support of the professional development of staff through short courses and postgraduate programmes in learning and teaching and supporting Advance HE Fellowships including National Teaching Fellows. It has a strong record of research and innovation in staff development, working in partnership with students, and enhancing the student learning experience including through online and digital pedagogic practices. It continues to invest in these areas as well as supporting broader scholarship and interdisciplinary projects.

As Head of the DLTE, you will lead the Department and manage its staff as they take responsibility for developing and delivering the portfolio of staff development in learning and teaching, contributing to strategy and policy development in relation to learning and teaching, and supporting quality assurance and enhancement across the University.

Who we are looking for

As the successful candidate, you will meet the criteria for a professorial position with an emerging international reputation and sustained excellent performance, having held leadership positions at national and increasingly international levels.

You will hold a doctorate and have extensive relevant experience of leadership and management in Higher Education with a strong track record of developing and delivering teaching and assessment at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level.

Additionally, you will have experience and knowledge of learning and teaching pedagogy and practice within Higher Education, with national-level engagement in learning and teaching development including the introduction of innovative teaching practices and appropriate use and development of technology.

You will also have a sustained record of publication of research and a thorough knowledge and background in enhancing learning, including through technological development and introduction of innovative teaching practices. With excellent organisational and management skills you will have the ability to manage budgets and to develop and deliver against planning targets.
