Job description
We seek a highly motivated and technically competent research assistant (RA) to work in Dr Afshan Malik's lab within The Diabetes Research Group at KCL. The group's research is focused on the mechanisms by which diabetes can damage cells and organs, and induce mitochondrial dysfunction. The RA will be primarily responsible for completing studies involving MtDNA measurements in clinical samples and experimental model system in order to evaluate its role as a diagnostic and predictive biomarker. The work will involve isolation of DNA from urinary, blood, experimental model systems, and measurement of Mitochondrial and Nuclear genomes using real time qPCR. The work will be focussed on the evaluation of MtDNA levels in baseline samples from new and established longitudinal cohorts of diabetes patients from the UK, USA and other regions with the aim to evaluate its predictive role in diabetic complications and mitochondrial dysfunction. The post holder will be expected to analyse and complete ongoing studies, undertake statistical analysis and assist in writing of and submission of manuscripts from this data. This post is suitable for an ambitious early stage research assistant with experience of qPCR and mitochondrial and diabetes research. Applicants need to be available to start as soon as possible.
