Research Fellow or Research Associate (Global Health Research)

We are recruiting a full-time Research Fellow/Research Associate, for an initial period of one year. Your initial project will be to lead a situational analysis of existing disease prevention and control policies, processes, stakeholders, and institutional relationships in the ASEAN region to inform development of a regional centre for infectious disease control. You will support a small team to engage stakeholders to identify current disease prevention and control activities and needs in each country, and determine effective operating mechanisms and partner roles for such a centre.

Responsibilities

The appointed candidate will:

• work with the PI, Global Health Office team, to engage regional experts and stakeholders, organise events, conduct situational assessment and stakeholder mapping (e.g. relational, positional) and prepare written reports.
• To contribute as required to development, implementation, analysis, and write-up of:
  • Peer reviewed journal manuscripts, project reports, and policy briefs.
  • Research funding applications for submission to national and international funding bodies.
  • Ethics applications to NUS and study country review boards for global research projects.
  • Interval and final reports for research grants and ethics submissions.
• To perform other relevant global health research duties as required.
• Lead the process of liaising across the teams and collaborators. Coordinate team meetings, support the drafting of meeting agendas and room bookings as needed.
• Be responsible for administrative tasks such as budget amendments as well as helping to set up all service contract procedures. For example, drafting adverts, bidding and service requirements, recruitment and ensuring payments are completed as per contract agreements, working closely with finance and administrative offices.
• Support project reporting and planning of research activities: e.g. helping to draft donor progress reports, supporting the Institutional Research Board (IRB) online procedures and submissions and amendments.
• Be involved in systematic reviewing and reporting of the literature.
• Be responsible for qualitative data collection and conducting own interviews. This will include independently organizing the sourcing and distribution of e-vouchers, data management/ cleaning working in a wider team, ensuring quality of transcriptions and creating clear shared filing and data back-ups IRB compliant repositories.
• Coordinate an e-survey working with the appointed survey company. Working independently to ensure complete and cleaned datasets are compiled and handed over ready for analyses.
• Contribute to qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods data analysis and reporting.
• Contribute meaningfully as a Teaching Assistant to selected online classes, including supporting technical tasks such and uploading teaching materials, managing breakout rooms using Zoom or Microsoft Teams as well as co-facilitating on interactive tasks.

Qualifications

Requirements

• At least a master’s degree in a relevant social science or public health discipline. A PhD is preferred.
• Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English, to an academic standard.
• Written and spoken fluency in at least one major Asian language (e.g. Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Bengali, Burmese, Hindi, Khmer, Lao, Malay, Mandarin, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese).
• Experience of co-authoring research reports or manuscripts to a high standard. First authorship and publication in a reputable journal are preferred.
• Strong grasp of latest IT technologies, ability to learn new ones quasi-independently, and commitment to work effectively on digital platforms and through online communications as needed.
• Demonstrable familiarity with research ethics board (IRB) e-submission procedures and requirements. Ability to support IRB preparations and amendments to the standard required for submission.
• Proficiency in literature reviewing and compiling of reference / citation lists from library searches, preferably using Mendeley. Experience conducting systematic or scoping reviews from conception to analysis and reporting is desirable.
• Ability to confidently present using PowerPoint at international meetings.
• Demonstrable training and/or experience in qualitative approaches and commitment to learning additional qualitative methodologies. Proficiency with qualitative data management software such as NVivo, Dedoose, and Atlas.ti is strongly desirable.
• Demonstrable training or experience in quantitative research, e.g. study design and sampling, collecting, cleaning, analysing, and interpreting quantitative datasets, and conducting statistical analyses in software such SPSS or STATA. Proficiency in R is preferred.
• Excellent organizing and communication skills, showing the ability to both follow instructions and use initiative appropriately.
• Commitment to support teaching and to develop technical skills in line with module content and learning outcomes.
