The research activities at the chair include on the one hand the development of a theory for artificial intelligence, currently in particular for artificial neural networks. On the other hand, the chair’s scientific interests focus also in the development of mathematical methods for solving inverse problems, primarily in the area of imaging, and partial differential equations using combinations of classical approaches and artificial intelligence. Part of the research activities is also interdisciplinary and currently includes applications primarily in the area of medical imaging and telecommunications. The teaching activities at the chair range from the mathematical foundations for our research areas such as applied harmonic analysis, approximation theory, inverse problems, and statistical learning theory, among others, to special lectures, which are also held in English, e.g. on mathematics of deep neural networks or artificial intelligence in imaging science.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • You will independently teach courses amounting to 9 semester-weeks and support the chair in the organization and implementation of all courses. Our range of courses is currently being designed, and you will be able to play an active role in shaping this phase.
  • You will support the research activities in the area of mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence. This includes collaboration and handling of third-party funded projects, as well as independently applying for, acquiring and implementing third-party funded projects. This includes the publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, the processing and presentation of results, as well as mentoring Bachelor, master and graduate students.
  • You will support the chair administration, especially in the management and processing of third-party funded projects.

Our requirements:

  • Applicants should have an excellent degree in mathematics, computer science, or a comparable field, as well as an above average PhD in the field of mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence, or applied harmonic analysis, imaging science, compressed sensing, or mathematical data science.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English, and willing to learn German within two years.
  • Ideally, candidates possess relevant experience with third-party funding, from application, implementation to reporting.
  • Successful applicants must have proven experience in teaching and supervising students (Bachelor's/master's/doctoral theses).

Your benefits:

  • The position allows for habilitation.
  • We offer a diverse and responsible position.
  • You are given the possibility to apply for third-party funding and research grants.
  • You can actively participate in the development of the new chair.
  • You will enjoy an inspiring working atmosphere in a highly international team.
