Durham University Business School

The Department of Economics & Finance

The department of Economics and Finance is home to over 80 members,  whose internationally renowned research spans specialism areas such as: Banking, Institutions and Development, Ethical Finance, Accountability and Governance, Economics Analysis and Mechanisms, Quantitative Research in Finance and Economics, Environmental and Energy Economics, and Experimental Methods in Business Research,

In line with the overall strategy, there are ambitious growth plans over the next three years, which will further strengthen the intellectual base and footprint of the research and teaching delivered by the Department of Economics and Finance.

The Role

We seek to appoint a dynamic and ambitious Professor and Head of Department to lead the Department of Economics & Finance through an exciting phase of expansion and development. Applications are sought from candidates from within both domains of Economics and Finance.

The role of the Head of Department is to provide strong academic leadership, oversee and develop the department operations whilst leading on the strategic development of research curricula across the Department’s programmes in order to foster an innovative, transformative and enabling education for students. 

The successful candidate will be a key member of the School’s Executive Team contributing to the development of the School’s and University Strategy. Embracing the Business School and Faculties strategies, they will empower others to engage in innovative research, develop and deliver exceptional teaching and enhance the overall student experience.

With intellectual authority and strategic vision, the Head of Department will lead the further strengthening and development of the Department’s research and the quality, range and effectiveness of its already excellent teaching. This is a key strategic role within Durham University Business School, helping to drive forward its strategy to be a leading and Top European Business School by 2027.

The post-holder will have the vision to lead and the ambition to advance world changing knowledge and secure global impact through increasingly collaborative research across disciplines with colleagues in Durham University and beyond. Seeking to contribute perspectives that enhance the utility and impact of research in other disciplines with scholarship and methods that promote a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

As part of their senior management role, they will represent the Department of Economics & Finance at University level meetings, including being a member of Senate and University Research and Teaching committees.  Reporting directly to the Executive Dean, they will work in close consultation with the Deputy Executive Deans and other Heads of Department to create a truly interdisciplinary and interconnected teaching and research environment.

The Head of Department will be supported by a senior management team including a Director of Education, overseeing programmes and the student learning experience, and a Director of Research, overseeing research, publications, impact and external funding.

The successful candidate will demonstrate leadership qualities being responsible for both academic and professional services colleagues, leading and overseeing Faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement, to promote excellence in scholarship and of early career colleagues.   Having the ability and willingness to consult and collaborate with all colleagues, providing an open and supportive style to help engender and encourage a spirit of scholarly ambition within the Department and engage with the wider University.

The position as Professor is a continuing post, with appointment as Head of Department initially for 3 years, which can be extended.

Head of Department of Economics & Finance

Applicants must demonstrate research excellence in the field of Economics and/or Finance with the ability to take a leading role as Head of Department in the development of the Department’s research and teaching, and to fully engage in the services, citizenship and values of the University.

Key responsibilities: 

To provide academic leadership to the department of Economics & Finance and to contribute to the leadership of Durham University Business School as part of the senior management team. Specifically:

  • To lead and implement an ambitious Department Strategy aligned to the University Strategy, Vision and Mission of the Business School. This will significantly contribute to the future design and implementation of Business School strategy encompassing the core areas of world-class research, education and the overall student experience.
  • To provide strategic leadership in all matters relating to the Department and play a key role in the development and implementation of overall business School strategic goals.
  • To be responsible to the relevant Executive Dean for managing an agreed Department budget that ensures that the Department/School operates in a financially sustainable manner.
  • To co-ordinate department-level activities relating to recruitment, probation, development, progression (including succession planning) and performance management, of all departmental staff.
  • To foster diversity, equality and inclusion amongst the Department’s staff and students, to eliminate discrimination and promote an effective work-life balance for all.
  • Pursue research that is world-leading, and world-changing in terms of originality, significance and rigour that is commensurate with the Department’s continuing emphasis on international excellence.
  • Lead the development of successful research project/fellowship proposals in pursuit of suitable national and international funding opportunities to support research and end-user engagement.
  • Deliver excellent teaching, offering lectures, seminars and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels.
  • Attract and provide excellent supervision to research students, and contribute significantly to the development of PhD programmes. 
  • To be responsible for ensuring that processes and systems are in place to ensure their Department’s/School’s compliance with the University Health and Safety Policies.
  • To ensure compliance by all staff in the Department with University policies, procedures and codes of practice.

Person Specification

Applicants must demonstrate leadership and research and teaching excellence in the field of Economics and / or Finance, and to fully engage in the services citizenship and values of the University.

Research

Candidates will demonstrate world-leading and world-changing research, and leadership in a research field within and / or beyond their institution(s), with research outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent. 

Essential Research Criteria – Grade 10 

  1. Qualifications - a good first degree and a Doctoral Qualification or PhD in Economics or Finance, or a related subject.
  2. Outputs - evidence of research outputs which are consistently recognised as internationally excellent with some output being evaluated as world class. Candidates are asked to submit two research papers with their application (as outlined in the How to Apply section below).  Candidates may additionally choose to submit evidence such as external peer review of their outputs.
  3. Personal Research Plan - evidence of a personal research plan which supports and enhances the Department’s research strategy.
  4. Research Leadership - leadership of national / international research groups and networks, with an internationally recognised contribution to the development of research fields with appropriate involvement in the leadership of funding bids Mentoring of early career researchers and support for departmental level research and the development of external collaborative teams or partnerships. Candidates may choose to include information about research group leadership, mentoring of research colleagues, invitations to and engagement with significant external events, engagement with international networks or projects. 
  5. PhD Supervision - a significant contribution to the development of PhD programmes and / or groups, including successful recruitment and excellent supervision of PhD students.
  6. Research Impact - leadership of research that has demonstrable impact beyond the Candidate’s institution(s).
  7. Income Generation -   evidence of leadership of successful research projects and / or fellowship proposals.

Teaching

Candidates will be able to evidence excellence in the development and delivery of teaching. They will demonstrate leadership, distinction and innovation in the design and delivery of high quality learning environments and curricula that enables student to achieve their potential.   

Essential Teaching Criteria – Grade 10 

  1. Qualification - candidates must be or have the ability to attain the rank of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/individuals/fellowship/fellow), which is the national body that champions teaching excellence.
  2. Quality - evidence of excellence in the development and delivery of high-quality and distinctive teaching, at least at a nationally competitive level. Candidates may choose to provide MEQ scores and / or peer reviews of teaching.
  3. Innovation – leadership in the development of innovative teaching and the design of learning environments / curricula that provide high quality teaching and student experience at an internationally competitive level including lectures, small group learning and/or using technology or other techniques to enhance learning and/or assessment.    
  4. Strategic - demonstrating leadership in the design and delivery of internationally-excellent teaching programmes and the creation of learning environments that enable students to achieve their potential.  

Services, Citizenship and Values

Candidates will demonstrate sustained excellence of leadership in the provision of the administrative and collegial requirements of their Department, Faculty, institution or discipline as well as demonstrating their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  2. Leadership - evidence of sustained excellence in leadership activities that support the administrative functioning of the candidate’s Department, Faculty or University and / or which support the development of their discipline.  (Candidates may choose to detail any leadership roles which they have undertaken, preferably in an academic context).
  3. Communication - candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to engage with a range of students and colleagues across a variety of forums.

Next Steps
