FULL-TIME EUROPEAN RESEARCH AREA (ERA) CHAIR HOLDER POSITION IN THE FIELD OF SCIENCE AND INNOVATION POLICY AND STUDIES

Applications are invited from candidates who possess the necessary qualifications in order to fill one (1) Full-Time Research Professor or Associate Research Professor - Position: ERAChair holder in Science and Innovation Policy and Studies (SIPS) with specialisation in Economics of Science and Innovation, at the DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS and the ECONOMICS RESEARCH CENTRE (CypERC).

The selected researcher will work for forty-eight (48) months in the framework of the EU H2020-funded ERA Chair “SInnoPSis Project”, and he/she will select his/her research team members. The Project aims to attract a high calibre academic and research leader in order to enable UCY to considerably upgrade its R&I activities in the SIPS field (Economics & Management, Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy and Information Technology) and to bring together excellent academics from the linked academic departments to consolidate all SIPS research activities at the University of Cyprus (UCY) into a multidisciplinary research unit.

Description

The objective of the project is to achieve its goals by attracting and supporting an international calibre research leader accompanied by a group of exceptional scientists in the SIPS field, coupled with the establishment of a multidisciplinary research unit under CypERC, which will allow optimal exploitation of the existing research capacity and infrastructures of UCY and facilitate the gradual upgrade of the research activities in the field

The principal thematic focus will be the SIPS field but emphasis will be placed on Economics of Science and Innovation. The Chair will be the Director of the foreseen SIPS unit to be created within the Economics Research Centre of UCY, having full autonomy in carrying out a research programme formulated by him/her a few months after the recruitment.

Position

The ERA Chair will be recruited by the host organization of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia, Cyprus, for the duration of forty-eight (48) months under a full employment contract with the possibility of extension for another two (2) years. Additional extension will be possible subject to availability of external funding secured by the ERA Chair and her/his research group.

Once hired, the Chair will be the Director of a research unit to be created within CypERC, while being responsible for its overall structuring and management and claiming the role of the Decision-Making Body Chair of the SInnoPSis project.

The ERA Chair will be completely autonomous as a research director and will be provided with the necessary freedom and flexibility to implement her/his research priorities and agenda.

The Chair will be responsible for overseeing all scientific, administrative, legal, financial and operational matters associated with the execution of the SInnoPSis project and the research unit with the support of the project manager, the administrative office of CypERC and the Research and Innovation Support Service of UCY. Also, he /she will be Work Package (WP) Leader for all the project WPs.

More specifically, the ERA Chair will be responsible for:

  • Organising the development of the Science and Innovation Policy & Studies unit within CypERC and providing benchmarks for meeting targets
  • Formulating a 4-year R&I programme in the SIPS field within 6 months of her/his recruitment
  • Exploring synergies with other UCY faculty members active in different areas of the SIPS field and maximise multidisciplinary approaches to research
  • Performing the overall scientific coordination and be the initial contact in the Unit for research issues
  • Supervising the technical progress of each theme and ensure that the integration across different research themes is achieved.
  • Overseeing the financial and administrative progress of the Project
  • Assessing the progress of the project work as such
  • Appointment/supervision of ERA Chair team members
  • Developing all matters related to the training and learning for all research personnel
  • Supervising and guiding the Project Manager
  • Implementing the data management plan of the project and revise it when needed
  • Coordinating networking activities, including communication and collaboration with successful international research units, networking with stakeholders etc. To this end, the ERA Chair will be in close collaboration with the Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication (DEC) Committee, taking valuable feedback for revising (when needed) the proposed DEC plan.

  • Facilitating dissemination of project results to all key research and innovation stakeholders in the SIPS field
  • Communicating with and implementing where applicable the suggestions of the Advisory Board
  • Carrying out risk management, including analysis of internal and external project risks, selection of risk mitigation measures and development of contingency plans

Benefits

  • A wide autonomy and independence in the research activities and application for new grants.
  • The yearly gross salary for this position will vary from €62.618,70 to €92.287,35 (which may increase up to €120.000 as the ERA chair holder may work and receive remuneration for ten (10) additional hours per week). From this amount employer and employee contributions to the Cyprus government funds will be deducted. A 13th monthly salary is incorporated into the monthly gross salary.
  • In addition, health insurance will be funded by the programme through the National Health System.
  • Salary fund to recruit new ERA Chair team members (around 4 Postdoctoral and 3 PhD students).
  • Additional funding for travelling, equipment, traveling at meetings, workshops, working visits, conferences attendance, etc.

About the DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS and the ECONOMICS RESEARCH CENTRE (CypERC)

The Economics Research Centre (CypERC) belongs to the Department of Economics at the University of Cyprus. The Centre aims at high quality policy-oriented research in economics. The CypERC is financed by Research Organisations in Cyprus and the European Union, through competitive funding procedures, and contributions from Governmental and other organizations.

CypERC has the necessary research infrastructure (suitably trained researchers, computer software and hardware, and constantly updated databases) to respond timely and effectively to research needs in a rapidly changing economy. The Centre also benefits from the expertise offered by established academics in Cyprus and abroad who participate in the research effort as Research Associates and Fellows, including the Nobel Laureate in Economics for 2010, Prof. Sir Christopher Pissarides.

CypERC aims at encouraging economists of high calibre to become involved in research on subjects of interest to the Cyprus economy. It also aims at serving as a channel for directing local and European research funds to economic research. Among the objectives of the CypERC is to study subjects of wider economic interest and publish articles in international academic journals.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates are required to hold a Doctorate degree from a recognized university. Moreover, the required qualifications for the academic ranks of Research Associate Professor and Research Professor positions are the same as those of the respective Academic position ranks, with the exception of the requirements related to teaching experience.   • The candidate should be a leader in his/her field with a strong publishing record, which should be related to the Economics of Science and Innovation
  • Very strong record in attracting research funding.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English Language is essential
