Job description

This 3-year post-doctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Uwe Drescher is funded by the BBSRC.

The Centre for Developmental Neurobiology and the MRC Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders are world-leading centres in the field of developmental neuroscience and brain disorders, situated in central London.

We are seeking a bright, talented and self-motivated young post-doctoral researcher to join our team. Candidates should have a PhD in Biological Sciences, knowledge of brain development, a first authorship on a paper in the field of neuroscience, and experience in in-vivo techniques to analyse mouse cortex function.

Key responsibilities

  • undertaking original biomedical research as an integral member of a group working on a deeper molecular understanding of autism spectrum disorders
  • here studying the role of autophagy and microglia in neural circuit formation
  • applying in vivo approaches to investigate the function of cortical neurons and microglia in mouse models for autism
  • performing cell-biological research using primary neuronal cultures

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Biological Sciences or related discipline (or close to completion)
  • At least one good first-author publication in the field of neuroscience
  • basic expertise in analysis of mouse cortex function in vivo
  • establishment and optimization of primary neuronal cultures
  • cell biological approaches using time-lapse techniques
  • biochemical analysis of protein function
  • immunohistochemistry
  • confocal microscopy
  • experience in molecular biological techniques
  • knowledge of relevant software (MATLAB, ImageJ, Python)
  • ability to work independently in the design and execution of experiments
