Job Description Summary

Dr. Bushra Raj’s laboratory in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology is seeking a motivated individual to fill a full time Research Specialist A/B position. The Raj lab will be newly opening in 2021. The lab seeks to investigate vertebrate brain development using zebrafish as the primary model system. Our focus is characterizing how pools of cells in the embryonic brain become increasingly specialized and give rise to a vast array of neurons during an animal’s lifetime. We use a combination of molecular biology, imaging, genetics, genomics, and CRISPR/Cas9 techniques to address questions of interest. For this position, the person is expected to work closely with the Principal Investigator to help manage the lab, care for animal stocks, perform and troubleshoot experiments, train and assist other lab members. The person should be able to work independently and also as part of a team, keep detailed notes, and finish tasks in an orderly and timely manner. Previous research experience preferred, with proficiency in zebrafish physiology, molecular biology, imaging, and/or transgenics being valuable skills. Position contingent upon funding.

Job Description

The Research Specialist A will perform zebrafish husbandry, genotyping and colony management of stock lines, as well as maintain accurate detailed records of the fish database. The individual will also be trained to assist with performing and troubleshooting experiments such as DNA and RNA purification, performing DNA or RNA microinjections, cloning, PCR and RT-PCR analysis, gel electrophoresis, fluorescent imaging, in situ hybridizations, and generating libraries for high throughput sequencing. The Specialist A will work closely with the Principal Investigator to learn how to design, discuss, execute and modify the experiments/protocols as needed. The ability to follow instructions as communicated by senior lab members is expected.

The Research Specialist B will perform zebrafish husbandry, genotyping and colony management of stock lines, as well as maintain accurate detailed records of the fish database. The individual will also independently assist with performing and troubleshooting experiments such as DNA and RNA purification, performing DNA or RNA microinjections, cloning, PCR and RT-PCR analysis, gel electrophoresis, fluorescent imaging, in situ hybridizations, and generating libraries for high throughput sequencing. The Specialist B will work closely with the Principal Investigator to design, discuss, execute and modify the experiments/protocols as needed. The ability to follow instructions as communicated by senior lab members is expected. The individual will also train new lab members, assist the team, and help with manuscript/grant preparation as opportunities arise.

The Research Specialist A/B will also be responsible for general lab upkeep (e.g. make solutions, order and receive lab supplies, maintain lab stocks, monitor lab equipment). The person will keep detailed, accurate records of all experiments, fish genetics, orders/invoices, and inventory.
