Job Description Summary
The Urban Health Lab (UHL) Director is a unique opportunity to help develop and grow several efforts at Penn Medicine to dismantle structural and institutional racism through research and action. The Director will work closely with UHL Faculty Director Dr. Eugenia South on three distinct but related areas of work: (1) the UHL; (2) antiracism efforts in the Department of Emergency Medicine; and (3) work in partnership with the Penn Injury Science Center (PISC) to create an infrastructure at Penn to facilitate authentic community-academic research partnerships.
The ideal candidate (1) is passionate about the health and wellbeing of Black and other minority communities, (2) is passionate about dismantling structural, institutional, and interpersonal racism through research and practice, and has demonstrated experience and knowledge in these areas, (3) has experience running multiple research studies, preferably with a community focus, (4) is a proven leader with managerial skills, (5) is a strategic thinker, and (6) has strong writing and communication skills.
The Penn Urban Health Lab (UHL) is dedicated to designing and testing individual and community level interventions to build healthy neighborhoods. The UHL has a focus in urban nature, blight remediation, violence prevention, and structural racism that has impacted Black and Brown communities. The UHL Director will (1) oversee day to day operations of the lab including supervising students and research assistants, (2) assist with development of and run the day-to-day operations of a variety of research projects (including regulatory requirements such as IRB, managing study budgets, managing study enrollment and data collection, running lab and study meetings), (3) maintain current community partnerships and develop new relationships, and (4) assist in writing, preparation, and submission of manuscripts, opinion pieces, and grants.
The Director will also assist Dr. South in her new role as the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) Vice Chair for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity. In this capacity, the Director will help develop and implement a strategic plan to build a culture of antiracism within Penn EM, including (1) reviewing departmental policies, procedures, and experiences to ensure they are founded in tenants of equity and antiracism, (2) targeted recruitment efforts to increase underrepresented minority representation among residents and faculty, (3) ongoing educational activities to increase knowledge and understanding of racism and structural competency, and (4) develop mechanisms to report, track, and intervene on microaggressions and racism experienced by faculty, trainees, staff, and patients.
Finally, the Director will build off the Penn Community Scholars Program, and work in partnership with PISC to create an infrastructure at Penn to facilitate authentic community-academic partnerships in an easy, meaningful, and productive way. This would provide needed scientific advances in areas of antiracism and health equity, with the following aims: 1) Expand the network of trained Community Scholars, to increase community capacity to partner in research with Penn investigators; 2) Develop an institutionalized model available to all schools and centers at the University of Pennsylvania that serves as a “go to” hub for equitable and sustainable bi-directional research partnerships; and 3) Implement and evaluate the acceptability and fidelity in the model proposed in Aim 2.
