About the opportunity
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team at the state-of-the-art sydneyBIONICS laboratory. In this role you will have the opportunity to combine independent and collaborative research along with the responsibility to coordinate research activities of the Group. You will be expected to produce published works in esteemed academic journals, international conferences and other forms of dissemination stemming from research associated with the laboratory and its collaborators. The role also involves coordination of group meetings, supervision of postgraduate and undergraduate students, including the supervision and training of staff, students, and research collaborators.
The sydneyBIONICS laboratory (opened 2019) engages in research in collaboration with fellow academics, clinicians and industry partners to innovate new technologies, techniques and models associated with excitable tissue – its modulation, restoration, reanimation, monitoring and control. Active research programs are underway in visual (bionic eye), auditory (cochlear implant), and reanimation of muscle function lost through disease or injury. Expansion of these operations is a key objective of the laboratory which currently has support from the National Health and Medical Research Council, generous philanthropic donors, and Sydney Nanoscience Hub’s Grand Challenge Programme.

- a Doctorate in engineering, physics, medical science, computer science or equivalent. Applicants who have submitted their PhD for examination or will do so in the immediate future can be considered
- outstanding communication skills and the ability to conduct high quality research with increasing independence and to present that work in an engaging way
- demonstrated experience in in vivo/in vitro data acquisition and processing with a comprehensive understanding of neuromodulation
- high level problem solving skills with the ability to address complex issues as they arise
- a strong track record (relative to opportunities) in research, including a body of work published in peer reviewed journals.
The School of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2019 to facilitate collaborative research excellence in the field of biomedical engineering. Through our academic staff and students, our research will aim to serve the public as a thought-leader and provide innovative technology for industry, hospitals, governments and the wider community.
Professor Gregg Suaning is Professor of Biomedical Engineering with the University of Sydney and Head of School of Biomedical Engineering. He has over three decades of experience in implantable neuroprosthesis research in both industry and academia helping the deaf to hear and the blind to see. He received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the California State University in 1986 and 1988 respectively. His Ph.D. in visual prosthesis from UNSW was awarded in 2003. He has been awarded with several international patents in the medical device field – primarily in sensory bionics. Gregg has authored over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has played a leadership role in in competitive research programs with funding in excess of $60M during his academic career.
