The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. Comprised of over 10 technical groups with more than 50 specialists who work in the field with top researchers, faculty, staff, and students, we focus on practical safety and environmental solutions by working with our campus partners in a process of shared learning to support the mission and research of Stanford University. The work environment is team-oriented, collaborative, deadline-driven, and vibrant.

EH&S’s Health Physics program is seeking a Health Physicist to support the radiation safety program, with emphasis in laser safety at Stanford University, Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC), Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH), and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), including the microsphere cancer and iodine therapy procedures. You must have experience in Laser Safety, specifically the ANSI standard. This position will perform laser safety audits, review Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), evaluate laser registrations, PPE and explore Laser Safety Program improvements.

In this challenging and rewarding position, you will work under general supervision to administer and implement technical and operational functions of radiation safety programs, which includes ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, to meet safety requirements and provide protection against exposure. You will also perform duties focused on routine research/medical facilities inspections, data gathering, establishing control measures, and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulations. If you have a strong science background, have either worked with lasers or provided assistance in the safe use of lasers, and know how to build strong relationships in the community you work in, this position may be the right career opportunity for you!

In this role you will:

  • Review, audit, and oversee the use of radioactive material, level of exposure, and safety requirements in research laboratories, medical institutions, and/or other operational environments.
  • Evaluate and investigate radioactive machines for usage and safety level, supervising receipt and disposal of radioactive materials, calibrating radiation producing and detecting equipment and helping minimize radiation exposure.
  • Perform periodic safety and instrumentation inspections, contamination and radiation surveys and ensure work is performed in compliance.
  • Document radiological and laser protection measures, and submission to radiation protection manager.
  • Revise and contribute to the development of safety policies/procedures for the safe use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
  • Audit, inspect and advise the radiation and laser safety programs at Stanford, Stanford Health Care, LPCH, and VAPAHCS.  Assist the Senior Health Physicist in the oversight of the radiation safety program in these areas by investigating and reporting on incidents and reviewing routine operations of the facilities.
  • Provide support for radioisotope cancer therapies.
  • Provide training to staff, researchers, graduate students or others utilizing or working with radiation related machines/work areas.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or related field. Three years of applicable experience in health physics and duties similar to above.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing and administering radiation safety programs, including laser safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to review and evaluate usage and safety level of radioactive material, lasers and machines.
  • Demonstrated ability calibrating radiation-producing and detecting equipment and performing safety inspections.
  • In-depth knowledge of radiation protection regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of laser protection guidelines, specifically ANSI.
  • Demonstrated experience in the design of radiation shielding, safety devices, and radiation machines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
