Stanford’s top-ranking Medical Center Development (MCD) team continues to build upon the generous support of its donor community, and is in the early stages of planning the next major fundraising effort in which Stanford Medicine will have newly-defined philanthropic priorities in alignment with the Stanford University-wide strategic vision. We anticipate fundraising around groundbreaking initiatives such as the Innovative Medicines Accelerator, a new Department for Health Policy, the new Stanford Cancer Center, expanded state of the art research facilities that bring togetether basic science, translational medicine and clinical care, as well as other Stanford Medicine fundraising priorities.

Within this framework, we seek experienced candidates for an Associate Director of Donor Relations to join the MCD Donor Relations team.

Job Purpose:

The Associate Director will manage Stanford University Medical Center Development’s Top Donor Relations Program, designed to communicate with the organization’s most engaged philanthropic investors. Working closely with the Principal Gifts team, and under the supervision of the Director of Donor Relations, the associate director will create and implement comprehensive, and high impact stewardship plans, writing highly customized reports, letters, and other communications.  

Reporting to the Director of Donor Relations for Medical Center Development, the Associate Director is a member of the donor relations team. In this capacity, the Associate Director will contribute to the overall stewardship vision and strategy while ensuring effective project management and efficient processes.  Stanford is committed to a donor-centric approach to development. Your responsibilities include:

Strategy

  • Serving as the primary relationship manager for the principal gifts team and acting as the liaison between this team and the MCD donor relations team
  • Participating in defining the principal gifts stewardship strategy in adherence to the university's stewardship standards.
  • On a regular and on-going basis, meeting with principal gifts team members to discuss and strategize stewardship opportunities

Project Management

  • Developing and implementing programs that provide comprehensive, high impact reporting to Stanford Medicine’s most significant donors.
  • Proactively monitoring and managing the stewardship needs of donors. Building a complete understanding of each donor's involvement and giving activity.
  • Coordinating with staff and development officers to develop and produce key, multidimensional stewardship deliverables, including written (hard copy, email or online content), video, or events.
  • Managing the reporting and data needs for stewardship of principal gifts donors, including the running of
    • Reportmart3 reports
    • Oracle reports 
  • Curating project-related data and documents in PostGrads to ensure accuracy and timeliness

Writing

  • Researching, drafting, editing, and finalizing acknowledgment letters for principal gift donors; collaborating with giving officers to ensure that the letters are appropriately customized and sent to donors in a timely manner while meeting the university's stewardship standards.
  • Researching, drafting, editing, and finalizing other general stewardship correspondence for principal gift donors as needed and requested
  • Researching, writing and editing reports and other stewardship collateral for principal gift donors, coordinating with colleagues, faculty, and leadership to create personal and accurate communications.

General

  • Maintaining open channels of communication with stewardship colleagues across the university
  • Assisting in setting priorities for stewardship team(s) and contribute to their overall effectiveness
  • Participating in special projects and coordinating with central stewardship as needed.
  • Developing knowledge of Stanford Medicine, as well as an understanding of how stewardship relates to the work of Stanford Medicine
  • Developing fluency with stewardship standards
  • A commitment to promoting and supporting an environment of diversity and inclusion
  • Other duties may also be assigned

To be successful in this position, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Experience in development, preferably in an academic environment
  • Experience with strategic planning highly preferred
  • Experience as a field fundraiser desirable.
  • Dependable; authentic in relationships, flexible, with a high degree of creative and innovative thinking 
  • Ability to build consensus
  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and ability to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization, including students, faculty, top university administration, high-level donors, and volunteers
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to create and edit high-level correspondence efficiently and under tight time deadlines
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Tact, discretion, and experience handling confidential information. 
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and database applications
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Demonstrated sound judgment in situations requiring independent decision-making and in handling confidential and sensitive material
  • Passion and energy for contributing to the growth of Stanford Medicine in a rapidly changing environment
  • Valid California Non-Commercial Class Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements*

  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand/walk, sit, use a telephone.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 25 pounds, writing by hand.
