Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

PPPL invites applications for the position of Deputy Project Manager for a variety of Construction and Science Projects in support of the Lab Mission.

Responsibilities

In conjunction with, and as allocated by the Project Manager, The Deputy Project Manager:

  1. Collaborates with PPPL and customer stakeholders to assist in the definition of project objectives, requirements, and key performance parameters.
  2. Safely assists in the achievement of project requirements on time and on budget including DOE Notable Outcomes, milestones, performance and technical requirements, and key performance parameters.
  3. Assists in the acquisition, procurement and management of resource and service requirements.
  4. Engages PPPL stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify hazards, potential environmental impacts and coordinates the development of plans and controls for their mitigation throughout the project life cycle.
  5. Provides interpretation of technical drawings and documents, and assists in the management of reviews for such things as: submittals, requests for information (RFIs), and change orders.
  6. Assists in the management of all aspects of project execution including safety, risk, scope, cost and schedule and change control.
  7. Identifies project issues and adverse trends and assists in the implementation of timely and effective recovery plan(s), when needed.
  8. Assists in the development and communication of timely and accurate project reports.
  9. Assists in project closeout including turnover to end user/operations and disposition of documents and records.
  10. Assists in conducting critiques and documents lessons learned that can be applied to future PPPL projects.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent (Major Engineering, Architecture, or Project Management) required
  • 5 years of relevant past experience managing complex construction projects.
  • Past experience as an Earned Value Management System (EVMS) Control Account Manager is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Required: 
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with peers, other organizations, project sponsors and stakeholders and suppliers.

    • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to conduct risk analysis.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage a broad range of work activities and technical disciplines involving a diverse spectrum of professional and non-professional personnel.

    • Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

    • Excellent Computer skills (PC/Mac)

      • Proficient knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite including: Word, Powerpoint, Excel using advanced excel functions.

      • Proficient with the Google Suite including: Google Slides, Google Docs/Google Sheets.

      • Experience with Primavera scheduling software, or equivalent.

    • Demonstrated knowledge sequencing, resource loading and other cost/schedule control.

    • Ability to adapt to external project impacts.

  • Preferred:

    • Experience with DOE project management system requirements and practices.

    • Past experience at DOE labs and/or managing DOE 413.3b projects preferred.

    • Advanced Degree in related field preferred.

Certificates and Licences: 

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification desired
  • Professional Engineer Certification or Architectural Licensure desired
  • LEED Accredited Professional desired

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is primarily remote during Pandemic conditions, but will transition to full time on-site (both office and in the field) as health conditions improve.
